The Negative Effects of
Tourism

Introduction
• Tourism and the environment have a very complex and
interdependent relationship. Tourism is one of the world’s largest
industries in today's world economy and is a great source of foreign
exchange for many developing countries. These countries’ major
assets are their natural resource and this also is what attracts many
of the tourists to these places. There have been many arguments
and debates about whether or not tourism is beneficial or harmful to
the environment. Much of the time, the countries, who are heavily
dependent on tourism for their main source of foreign exchange,
overlook certain setbacks such as the fact that sometimes they are
not prepared to meet or support such a vast amount of people.
These countries try and make the best out of this by taking many
things out of the environment and causing damage to their land
that in some cases can be permanent. These negative effects
caused by tourism industry can be very costly to the country and its
population. Some effects include pollution, animal and plant
extinction, coral reef destruction, inadequate sewage and
destruction or erosion of the beaches, just to name a few.
Economic Development
• Large Hotels for tourists is the
main source of economic
development in Jamaica.
Everything that is done to
accommodate tourists sets
Jamaica one step back on the
environment scale. The
addition of tourists over the
past few years is leading up to
migration of native people in
search of jobs drawn by
tourism growth, and has led
people to live in
environmentally vulnerable
locations which is damaging
the environment and ecology of
Jamaica. The deforestation
affects Jamaica’s wild life and
kills of plants and animals.
Effects On The Environment
• The building of hotels and
resorts due to the massive
increase of tourism in Jamaica
is resulting in vast amounts of
damage on to the
environment. Human activity
including pollution, oil spills,
inadequate sewage and waste
disposal, destruction and
erosion of beach, coral reef
destruction, polluted animals
and plant extinction. If people
do not do something about
these effects there will be long
term consequences that
cannot be reversed which will
result in damage to their main
industry , tourism. This
includes limited land areas,
which in turn cause
unsustainable disposal.
People
• Researchers and Scientists have
been studying this issue and
have come up with recent
developments that the growing
level of population and the
demand for tourism takes a
very large toll on the
environment. The damages
caused by the industry that
controls country’s economy are
much worse than people
acknowledge. It deprives local
communities of Jamaica of their
natural resources. They do not
get enough water and flora and
fauna is damaged by the large
amounts of people visiting.
Pollution in these areas are
getting worse and the resources
are slowly diminishing.
Conclusion
• In conclusion if things are not
done to help at least regulate
these changes more and more
wild life will become extinct
and more and more damage to
the land will occur. We can
help this by limiting pollution
and by having adequate
sewage treatment plants and
not building so many resorts or
at least regulate the growth of
tourism in certain areas where
tourism has effected their
natural resources.
