On 31st December people all over the Britain meet to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one. They meet at the parties to have fun and wait for midnight . The most famous meeting place in London is Piccadilly Circus or Trafalgar Square . When the clock strikes 12,people shake hands, throw hats, dance, sing, kiss and wish ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR’.

In Scotland, New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay.

Scots have a custom of ‘first footing’ The New Year’s Day -1st January – is not so noisy. People go to parties or watch parades and football games.

New Year’s Day is also a day when people make New Year’s resolutions . They promise to learn or work better, to lose weight, to give up bad habits.

Unfortunately, most people forget their resolutions the day after.

Children play it in the parks on Easter Sunday. Every year there is an Easter egg hunt on the lawns in the gardens. Children look for eggs hidden in the grass, bushes and even trees. When they find the cloloured eggs, they put them in their baskets.

On 5th November the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Day . Guy Fawkes was a Catholic who in 1605 tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder. However, king James I knew about the plot earlier. The king’s soldiers caught Guy Fawkes and he was executed. Today the English have fireworks and bonfires o, dress them in old clothes and put old hats on their heads. The dolls are called ‘guys’. Then children walk the streets carrying the ‘guys’, and shout ‘A penny for the guy!’ . Then they make big bonfires and burn their ‘guy’.

For many British and Americans, Christmas begins on 25th December, Christmas Day.

However, Catholics start celebrating Christmas the day before, on 24 th December , Christmas Eve . It is also the day when children prepare cookies and milk for Santa Claus and some hay for his sayings inside. reindeer . Then they hang The houses are decorated with stockings ivy, holly and at the fireplace . On Christmas Day children find a lot of presents in their stockings and under the Christmas tree. The whole family gather round the table to have Christmas dinner; roast turkey, potatoes, Brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding. After dinner they pull crackers, which look like big, paper sweets, and find paper hats, funny toys and wise mistletoe.

The next day, 26 th December , is called Boxing Day . Many years ago people used to give presents in boxes to their servants on that day.
