Important!
• In the modern English we can use her to
countries that have feminine gender:
Ex.: Venezuela has her/its particular problems.
• When we don’t know the sex of the baby:
Ex.: The child is crying. Its teeth are growing.
Double Possessive
• noun + of + possessive pronoun
• One of my aunts is American. =
An aunt of mine is American = Uma das minhas
tias é Americana.
Don’t confuse!
• Those are Julia’s friends.
• I saw one of Gabriel’s parents.
Watch Out!
• Everybody/everyone/somebody/someone/
nobody/no one – his/her (formal), their
(informal and modern)
Ex.: No one got his or her bus.
• One – one’s/ his
Ex.: One loves one’s/his family.
• Names of ships – her
Ex.: The Titanic had her crew in 1912.
