Unity IDs and Passwords • Must have a Unity ID and password to access email, most computer labs on campus, library resources/databases, file space, Web space, etc. • • UserID: First initial, middle initial, last name (6) • • Distribution: new students at orientation; staff at hire • http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/your_unity_account/ Password: last four digits of the Campus ID number plus the month and day (mmdd) of the account holder' birthday Some engineering students may have Eos accounts instead of Unity… no difference, provides access to the same network II. Unity File Space • Each student is allotted 300mb of free network file space to store files, email, and Web pages on the university network (*change from 50mb) • to change your file space allocation between AFS file space, email space, and Web space, visit: https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/tools-bin/ usmdb-quota III. K: Drive--AFS, and Lockers • The university network uses the Andrew File System (AFS) • AFS allows you to create a file in one physical space (library Unity lab), and then access and edit/print that file in another networked location on campus (Brooks lab) • On Unity Windows workstations, you can access your files by choosing “My Computer” and selecting the virtual drive with your Unity user ID, usually the K: drive III. K: Drive--AFS, and Lockers • Files may also be accessed through an FTP (file transfer protocol) program • Users may request additional file space for a fee, and these added file accounts are referred to as “lockers” • More information about Unity file space and lockers can be obtained from the IT Essentials Web site… http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/ managing_files/afs.html IV. E-mail and Webmail • Preferred way to access NC State e-mail is via the Web… http://webmail.ncsu.edu (also called Webmail and squirrel mail) • E-mail is stored on an IMAP server, which counts toward your total 300mb of total file space allowed • To set up Eudora, Outlook, or other e-mail programs to read your NC State mail, apply the settings at: http://www.ncsu.edu/resnet/ pages/email_setup/email_setup.php Webmail Interface V. Posting Your Own Web Pages • NC State provides storage space on a Web server for every student (part of your Unity allocation) • First, use the WWW Setup Tool to establish your account… https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/ tools-bin/www-setup • Next, create your Web pages • Finally, transfer your pages to your new Web directory using an FTP program… ftp.ncsu.edu • Web files are then accessible online at… http://www4.ncsu.edu/~your_unityID VI. Computing Facilities--CALS • http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/computing/ facilities/student_labs.html • 22 labs, predominantly Windows, ~400 stations • Most can be reserved for classes, not always open for individual use, can check for reserved times using the Web link above • 11-13 Polk Hall is the exception… open for student use 8am-5pm • Other college-specific labs… http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/ connections_labs/campus_computer_labs/ campus_labs.html VI. Computing Facilities--Campus • Unity computer labs are operated by the Information Technology Division (ITD) • Nine primary labs, six open 24 hours a day… http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/ connections_labs/unity_computer_labs/ • Software applications available… http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/software/apps.html VI. Computing Facilities--Campus • 21 iMac kiosks are also spread around campus, providing quick access to Webmail and event schedules VI. Computing Facilities--Small Groups • Beginning Spring ’05, you can reserve two “flyspaces” in Talley, for use by small groups of 2-6 persons collaborating on class projects • rooms include two stationary computers w/ flatscreens, one wall-mounted panel tv, DVD-VCR players, whiteboards, and open ports for your own laptops • for more information, or to reserve your two-hour block of time, visit... http://www.ncsu.edu/flyspace/ • collaboratory meeting space also available in library (does not include the technology)... http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/ads/dml/reserve.html VI. Computing Facilities--Small Groups • Talley Student Center Flyspace: VII. Printing--Work Files • Students can print to laser printers in unity labs for .06 per black/white page • Must first establish and add money to your WolfCopy account… College of Veterinary Medicine Library, College of Textiles Copy Center, Laundry Copy Center, Jordan Natural Resources Library, 400 Poe Hall, Student Center Lobby, Brooks Computer Lab, or University Graphics • Print directly to lab printer after logging in with Unity ID (recognizes how much money you have left in your print quota) or… • log into the printing network… http://print.ncsu.edu/ browse to a file on your computer, and select the printer to which you want to print… VII. Printing--Copies • Most campus copiers maintained by WolfCopy • Can purchase copies for 4.9 cents per page, if you use your WolfCopy card, or your all-campus ID card (ID cards must be encoded for copying at the ID office in the West Dunn building) • Cash copies, where available, are .10 per page VII. Printing--Posters • CALS majors and non-majors enrolled in CALS classes are eligible to print large color posters for class projects, conference presentations, or college-related displays • Printers are located in 1400 Williams Hall, and the Ricks Annex • Two free drafts and one free poster may be printed, additional posters must be printed for a fee through University Graphics • Most users develop posters in Word, Powerpoint, or Photoshop, then make an appointment to print the completed file http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/computing/sop/ classrooms/LF_Printer.html VIII. Wireless Options • You can access online resources and the Web wirelessly in various buildings and open spaces on campus. Locations with wireless access include: http://www.ncstate.net/wireless/docs/map.html • Your laptop or PDA/handheld must have a wireless card compatible with the 802.11b wireless standard, and your card must be configured to receive ncsu signals • After configured, open a browser and go to… http://nomad.ncsu.edu/login.pl yellow = partial coverage, green = complete VIII. Wireless Options • For configuration settings and further information, visit… • http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/ connections_labs/wireless.html • http://www.ncstate.net/wireless/ IX. Network Resources • many resources can be accessed via the Web with your Unity ID and password • TRACS LINK provides students with access to registration information: - check/change address - view class schedules - check tuition rates - view semester grades - view academic totals • http://www.ncsu.edu/reg_records/tracs.html IX. Network Resources: Oracle Calendar • Networked calendar available to all faculty, staff, and students at NC State • Expected rollout, fall semester 2005 • Used to post personal appointments; also others can send you appointments, which you can accept (I’ll be there) or reject (I’m busy) • Unless a calendar is marked “private” you will be able to check others’ calendars to see when they are available for appointments/meetings • You will only be able to see when they are scheduled, not what they are scheduled to do IX. Network Resources: Oracle Calendar • Eventually, there will be “subscribable” calendars, so you can populate your personal calendar with specific dates (student center movie schedule, football/basketball schedules, club schedules, etc.) • Your calendar dates will reside on a remote server and can be retrieved via a Web interface or a desktop client • You can also hot sync your desktop client with a handheld to move your calendar dates to/from a PDA/handheld device • http://brickyard.ncsu.edu/ • You should be aware that some faculty use an online learning management system developed at NC State to place course materials online… WolfWare • WolfWare may be thought of as file space or “lockers” for faculty and instructors teaching courses at NC State • Through WolfWare, you may access course syllabi, course handouts, post messages to discussion boards, and submit assignments to your instructors • For more information… http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/help/ • WebCT is also a learning management system used by faculty at NC State to deliver course materials and/or teach courses online; it was developed in Canada and is widely used in many universities around the world • Through WebCT, you may also access course syllabi and files, participate in discussions, and upload assignments and work; WebCT has added features not found in WolfWare, more advanced • For more information… http://webct.ncsu.edu/ IX. Network Resources: WebAssign • WebAssign is another tool that may be used in courses you take at NC State • WebAssign allows students to submit homework and participate in tests and quizzes online • For more information… http://webassign.ncsu.edu/ X.
