Sec 9 - Solving for Exact Solutions
with the Quadratic Formula
Homework: Pg 269 #1-9, 43
*EXACT answers unless there is a word problem
where a decimal would make more sense.
 General Form of a Quadratic Equation
 Quadratic Formula
Ex 1: Field Hockey
 A field hockey player makes a scoop that releases
the ball with an upward velocity of 34 ft/sec.
The function h = -16t² + 34t models the height
of the ball after t seconds. When will the ball
reach a height of 15 ft?
 Think About It: Why would SADMEP not
work in this situation?
Ex 2: Solve and Give Exact Solutions
 2x² - 1 = 5x
Steps:
1. Put in General Form
(must equal 0)
2. Substitute a, b and c
into the Quadratic
Formula and simplify.
3. Break down the
Radical
4. Split into 2 Fractions
(if needed)
5. Reduce the fractions
(if needed)
 15x² + 2x + 1 = 0
Ex 3: Solutions with Complex Numbers
Ex 4: SADMEP or QF
How did you know when to use SADMEP and when to use the
Quadratic Formula?
