Warm-Up (Page 50) 10/25/11
Glue (with 4 drops of glue) the BLUE, Mineral & Rock
learning goals into the top part of page 50.
Below this WRITE Warm-up & do the following:
Take a sample from the bowl on your table.
Draw a picture of it & write down 5 observations about it
below the picture.
A mineral is a naturally formed,
inorganic solid that has a definite
crystalline structure.
Examples: Diamonds, Talc, Emeralds
Solid
Cannot be a liquid or a gas
Naturally Occurring
Found in nature, not man-made
Inorganic
Is not alive and never was, non-living
Fixed composition
Has a chemical formula, most are formed from compounds of two
or more elements, some minerals consist of one element
ex. Au (Gold)
Crystal Form
A definite structure in which atoms are arranged
NOW…
Use pages 66-67 in your textbook to write examples or
ways to remember SNIFC
Ex.
Fixed Composition: Si2O7 (silicon & oxygen)
Inorganic: Draw a flower & cross it out (nonliving!)
Is Wood a mineral?
Color
One mineral can be many different colors
Luster
The luster of a mineral is the way its surface reflects light.
Streak
It is the color of a mineral
when it is powdered.
The streak and color of
some minerals are the same &
some are an entirely different color.
Hardness
Scale goes from 1-10.
10 = diamond
1= Talc (baby powder)
Cleavage & Fracture
Cleavage is when
minerals break along a
smooth, flat surface.
•Fracture is when minerals
break unevenly along a
curved or irregular surface.
Special Properties
Some minerals have unique properties: (Examples)
React with Acid
Magnetism
Fluorescence
Odor
Conductivity
All minerals
are/have
