The power of the tongue
The power of the tongue
Why are we having this workshop?





Our people need spiritual ‘meat’
People rely heavily on the sermon
We don’t have enough preachers
We can’t plant more churches or
encourage the churches unless we
have more preachers
We can’t assume that we have
arrived in our preaching
Research Point of View
The focal point of most worship
services is the sermon…
Highly effective churches have
pioneered ways of maximizing the
impact of the sermon…
Research Point of View
The first lesson from the highly
effective churches is that people
have to be taught how to hear truth.
The first step in this process is often
challenging people’s views of
Scripture…

Workshop Objectives:




To deepen our understanding of
God’s word
To train ourselves to preach
expository sermons
To upgrade the level of preaching in
our regions and churches
To multiply the number of effective
preachers in the Philippine Family of
Churches
Biblical example:
The Levites...instructed the people in
the Law while the people were
standing there. They read from the
Book of the Law of God, making it
clear and giving the meaning so that
the people could understand what
was being read.
- Neh 8:7-8
Biblical example:
Then all the people went away to eat
and drink, to send portions of food
and to celebrate with great joy,
because they now understood the
words that had been made known to
them.
- Neh 8:7-8
Our responsibility:

Like the Levites, we are
called upon to give
‘exposition’ of Scripture,
in order that people may
understand the meaning
of the text.
What is ‘exposition’?
Exposition is …doing
explanation in a sermon…
revealing information drawn
from the background
material and exegetical
study – Al Fasol
Expository preaching vs
conventional preaching
Compared to conventional
preaching, expository preaching
gives more emphasis to the Biblical
context.
A bad (ICOC) example:
Hab 1:5 says:
"Look at the nations and watch-and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your
days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.
A bad (ICOC) example:
Hab 1:5-6 says:
"Look at the nations and watch-and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.
I am raising up the Babylonians,
that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth
to seize dwelling places not their own.

Advantages of Expository Preaching
For (you) the preacher:
 It keeps you sharp on the Bible
 It gives you greater confidence in using the
Bible as the true authority
 It makes sermon preparation more interesting
 It gives more emphasis on the Bible than the
preacher
 You can teach more with less verses; sermons
become shorter but “meatier”
Advantages of Expository Preaching
For the audience:
 It makes the sermon more interesting
 It increases appreciation for God’s word &
encourages people to study the Bible
 It disarms the audience; less feel of coercion
 It equips people with solid principles that they
can apply when they are alone
 It creates an atmosphere of deeper study &
multiplies preachers
Vocabulary to learn:



Exegesis = drawing meaning ‘out of the
text,’ focusing on original intent;
opposite of eisegesis = putting meaning
‘into the text’
Hermeneutics = giving contemporary
relevance to a text
Expository sermon = explanatory result
of exegetical study
An exercise in reading…
Suppose you were walking
in the park and you found
this letter…
Friday morning
Dear Tito Caloy,
I’m sorry for not writing back right away. I was
caught up in school and I had to do some things
for Sam. Thank you for the stuff you gave,
and I will give some to Baby.
Anyway, I’m sure you will do what you
promised so that I can go there. Be assured that I
will work on the problems, even though there are
a lot…daghan caayo!
Btw, Peter won his game last month. He’s into
the finals. Regards to Tita. See you next
month!
Love,
Bim-bim
To keep in mind:
1.
2.
3.
The goal of exegesis is to find out
what the original author intended.
A text cannot mean what it never
meant.
Do not begin with the ‘here and now,’
but with the ‘there and then.’
Focus on the original meaning
To interpret and apply his text in
accordance with its real
meaning is one of the
preacher’s most sacred duties.
– John Broadus
Elements of Expository Preaching
“The Central Idea of Text” (CIT)
is a simple declarative sentence,
written in the past tense, which
says what the text meant back
then.
Elements of Expository Preaching
“The Main Objective of the
Text” (MOT) is a broad
description of the primary
purpose or intent of the text.
Elements of Expository Preaching
“The Main Objective of the Sermon”
(MOS) is a statement of what the
preacher hopes to accomplish with
this one message, for this group.
The MOS should go hand in hand
with the MOT.

WHERE THERE IS NO VISION…
Proverbs 29:18
Where there is no vision, the
people perish
Habakuk 2:2

plain upon tables, that he may
run that readeth it.
Proverbs 29:18
Where there is no revelation, the
people cast off restraint; but
blessed is he who keeps the law.
Habukuk 2:2
Write down the revelation and
make it plain on tablets so that a
herald may run with it.

FILTHY RAGS?
Isaiah 64:6
"All of us have become like
one who is unclean, and all
our righteous acts are like
filthy rags...“
NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION
Isaiah 64:5-6
NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION
5 You come to the help of those who
gladly do right, who remember your
ways. But when we continued to sin
against them, you were angry. How
then can we be saved?
6 All of us have become like one who
is unclean, and all our righteous acts
are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up
like a leaf, and like the wind our sins
sweep us away.
Isaiah 64:5-6
ENGLISH STANDARD VERSION
5 You meet him who joyfully works
righteousness, those who remember
you in your ways. Behold, you were
angry, and we sinned; in our sins we
have been a long time, and shall we be
saved?
6 We have all become like one who is
unclean, and all our righteous deeds are
like a polluted garment. We all fade like
a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind,
take us away.
FORCEFULNESS?
Matthew 11:12
From the days of John the
Baptist until now, the kingdom
of heaven has been forcefully
advancing, and forceful men
lay hold of it.

Kingdom of heaven has suffered
violent attacks, and violent men
try to seize it.
CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH

Baptist until now, the kingdom
of heaven has been subjected
to violence, and violent people
have been raiding it.
THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS
Matthew 25:14-15
Again, it will be like a man going on a
journey, who called his servants and
entrusted his property to them. To one
he gave five talents of money, to
another two talents, and to another one
talent, each according to his ability.
I CAN DO ALL
THINGS?
Philippians 4:13 HCSB
I am able to do all
things through Him who
strengthens me.
I CAN DO ALL THINGS?
Philippians 4:12-13
I know both how to have a little,
and I know how to have a lot. In
any and all circumstances I have
learned the secret of being
content--whether well-fed or
hungry, whether in abundance or
in need. I am able to do all things
through Him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13—
Out of context, “I can do everything through him
who gives me strength,” has been widely abused
by Christians who felt it was a mandate to do
things to which they had not been called and for
which they had not been gifted. In context, of
course, it refers simply to being content and
coping in any and every socio-economic context.
This is now clarified in TNIV with “I can do all
this.”

Testament, Denver Seminary
GOD WILL GIVE ME THE
DESIRES OF MY HEART?
Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself in the
LORD, and he will give you
the desires of your heart.
"SHARING YOUR FAITH"
Philemon 6
I pray that you may be active
in sharing your faith, so that
you will have a full
understanding of every good
thing we have in Christ.
NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION
Philemon 5-7 New International Version
5 I hear about your faith in the Lord
Jesus and your love for all the saints. 6 I
pray that you may be active in sharing
your faith, so that you will have a full
understanding of every good thing we
have in Christ. 7 Your love has given me
great joy and encouragement, because
you, brother, have refreshed the hearts
of the saints.
Philemon 5-7 New American Standard
5 … I hear of your love and of the faith
which you have toward the Lord Jesus and
toward all the saints; 6 and I pray that the
fellowship of your faith may become
effective through the knowledge of every
good thing which is in you for Christ's
sake. 7 For I have come to have much joy
and comfort in your love, because the
hearts of the saints have been refreshed
through you, brother.
Philemon 5-7 Holman Christian Standard
5… I hear of your love and faith toward
the Lord Jesus and for all the saints. 6 I
pray that your participation in the faith
may become effective through knowing
every good thing that is in us for the
glory of Christ. 7 For I have great joy
and encouragement from your love,
because the hearts of the saints have
been refreshed through you, brother.
Philemon 5-7 New Living Translation
5 …I keep hearing of your trust in the
Lord Jesus and your love for all of
God's people. 6 You are generous
because of your faith. And I am praying
that you will really put your generosity
to work, for in so doing you will come to
an understanding of all the good things
we can do for Christ. 7 I myself have
gained much joy and comfort from your
love, my brother, because your
kindness has so often refreshed the
hearts of God's people.
On Philemon 6—
Here is one of the most important changes of all.
The NIV led many zealous evangelists astray with
its translation, “I pray that you may be active in
sharing your faith, so that you will have a full
understanding of every good thing we have in
Christ.” The little letter to Philemon is not about
evangelism at all, but entirely about Paul's hope
that Philemon will welcome Onesimus back home
in keeping with his reputation for hospitality. Thus
the TNIV's, “I pray that your partnership with us in
the faith may be effective in deepening your
understanding of every good thing we share for the
sake of Christ” is far better.
