Understanding Others


The first step in getting along with others is getting to know
them, finding out their interests will help you to know them
better.
Interests reflect values. Understanding their values is also helpful
in understanding others.
Ask Yourself:
 Why do people behave the way they do?
 Why do people handle the same situation differently with
different people?
 What are the personality traits we should all strive to have?




Observing people is a good way to start
understanding them.
Body Language is sometimes a better indicator
of a persons thoughts and emotions.
Facial Expressions are also good to observe.
When you are happy your pupils get larger. When
your sad, they constrict!
Observing people in different situations is a
good way to learn about them
The following traits will help you
to improve your interpersonal
relationships on the job and with
family and friends!!
Friendliness, Courtesy and Tact

Try to have a friendly attitude towards others; not
always easy if your shy, however, if your sincere it
comes through
 Courtesy means to be polite and have good manners all the
time!!
 Being tactful is always necessary. It
shows respect to all people involved. There is always a way to
give constructive criticism without hurting someone's
feelings by being rude or offending someone.
Personal Ethics
This includes honesty, integrity and a sense of fair
play; things that everyone desires and deserves



When you behave ethically, people will trust
you
It’s important to be honest on the job, with
customers and co-workers, and to family and
friends
You can be honest but use tact!
Creativity –
Using your imagination to be inventive. Finding
new ways of completing tasks at work will make
you shine!
 Being creative also means analyzing a situation or
problem from a different point of view
Initiative – Means doing what needs to be done
without being asked or urged to do so.
Responsibility – Being accountable for your actions
and doing your duty. “Man Up”
Your attitude is the mental outlook
you have towards people and
situations – LIFE!
Difficult Assignment:
Positive – Welcome it as a challenge
Negative – Complainers
“Is the glass half empty or half full?”
If you have self-control you are tactful and
usually slow to anger
You don’t indulge on your impulses and you
behave in a disciplined way
Being disciplined is acting in an orderly way
Knowing yourself is the first step in making
personal changes
 What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Make a list!!
 What do you want to approve upon?
 Practice the traits you want to improve on.
 Listening to others feedback is very important.
Be open to change negative behavior.
 Flexibility is Essential in all areas of your life!!
Your perceived worth or value

Having a good self-esteem helps you to see
yourself as being able to do a good job and
getting along with others
To boost someone else's self-esteem treat them
with respect and kindness
“Do unto others as you would have done to you”
Understanding a person’s situation or
frame of mind.



Learn to respect others point of view even if
you don’t agree with it.
When people are upset or angry there is
usually something else going on.
Being empathetic usually gains a person’s trust
and respect faster

In addition to the personal traits that we just discussed, there
are a few personal skills that will help you get along with others
on and off the job
Assertiveness
Being assertive means standing up for your rights, beliefs
and ideas

People will respect you if your assertive without being
pushy or aggressive!!

Solving Someone’s Problem….


People will be more likely to listen to your ideas
or proposals if it will benefit them!
Phrase your ideas in terms of others needs
Time Management –


Learn to budget your time and record important
deadlines or appointments
To be effective in work you must use your time
wisely

Establish goals, set deadlines, allocating time for each
task and being realistic
Goal Setting
Where are you going in your career?
How about your personal life?
You won’t get there if you don’t know where
your going!!
