VITA
A history of shades
Shade communication:
Describing color and shade
The original Classical shade guide

This shade guide example is setup by ‘Value’ (lightest to darkest tab).
Regardless the shades are not evenly spaced by Value or ‘Chroma’
(Lightness + ‘Richness or saturation’) and if mixed will produce
unwanted inconsistencies
Patients shades will often fall in-between several unrelated tabs.
Definitive correlation between the tabs is lacking and confusing
Looking at the shades tabs of B2 and D2, they appear lighter than A2.
D4 is lighter than A3.
Classical shades are further restricted when
arranged by Lightness and Chroma

Visual Color Perception
Tooth shades fall into a
banana-shaped area
There are approximately
1000 measurable dental
shades.
Of these 1000, only 100 variations are visually noticable.
Vita 3D-MASTER is ordered and equidistant for perfect matches
1M1
*
A new intermediate shade of
1.5M1 is observed and created
by mixing the 1M1 and 2M1
together.
The original Vita Classical shades
overlap each other which is often
confusing in shade choice.
Shades cannot be equally mixed with an
expected repeatable result.

Compare and select
the brightness-value
from the top row only.
Start from darkest

matches the best
Fan out the three shade
tabs to select the
appropriate Chroma or
Saturation level.
Now the 2M2 looks the
best
The final selection is the
comparison of shades

appearing the better.
An alternative value lightness 3D-Master shade
approach
L=Yellow & R=Red Hue Tabs
The lightness or value groups are clearly seen
and view is unobstructed of hue’s
Traditional
A final base shade of 3M1 is confirmed.
No influence or advantage was noted from
the L or R shaded variants in this case
