THE “GRAND” POTENTIAL (

) The mentioned Feasibility Study forecasted (in 1999) a traffic in Y2005 along PE 5/8 (assuming they would have been completed!) and along via Egnatia of 23,800,000 ton of goods (ca. 10% on rail) From/To Central Europe From/To Italy … And so distributed: 75% in the range that goes from Ancona to Brindisi 25% in the range that goes from Ravenna to Trieste (Koper) … In addition, the potential might shift from road to rail (according to their final destination)

According to ICE, Italian businesses in Greece are mostly SME’s.
Therefore, official statistics might not be accurate enough, for SME’s directly manage their affairs via local agents and distributors.
Nevertheless, Italian businesses have been experimenting some other forms of investments...

Transadriatic services in short sea shipping Adriatic and Ionian corridor is profitably served by Europe Far East services (container).
But freight and passenger flows that travel on shorter routes are an essential component of cities (ports) along our Med coastlines. Although a catch up is needed (and it takes time!) in order to respond to tourist
increasing
demands and commercial (refer to cruise business, for example)…
GENERALLY SPEAKING… If we assume that 1)Road infrastructures have, in average, shorter programming/realization time than railways, 2)East – West corridors (mainly road ones) have shorter realization time than North – South ones …
… than Adriatic and Ionian corridor is the natural answer to mobility needs generated from/to central Europe and Greece, the Balkans, Turkey … and farther away via existing intermodal transport services (road – sea – road) – Ro/Ro, Ro/Pax ships and planned services road – sea – railway (intermodal train services)
