The problem
 HCI studies lag behind in
computing syllabus (not really
found in BSc syllabus)
 HCI is a necessity
• How can HCI have a more active
role in the BSc syllabus in Latin
America?

Relevance
 Because of the academic formation
of new researchers, practitioners,
designers and engineers alike, in
HCI in Latin America
 It takes time and resources
• Education is the key.

On professional practice
 Uneven evolution of code
development with the GUI
expected side of it
 The mistaken "friendly software"
 Usability notions barely applied.
CHI2001
UTM México
8
HCI on BSc syllabus
 Absence of HCI studies in BSc
degrees
• HCI only found in specialised,
graduate studies.
CHI2001
UTM México
9
Goals expected
 To foster communication among
researchers
 To raise awareness in the topic
• To learn from my experience at the
UTM with the Study Groups.

Earlier work
 ACM SIGCHI Curricula
 A definitive guide for considering
the addition of HCI studies into an
university level syllabus

SIGCHI Curricula
• It is a resource for anyone wishing
to put together either a single
course or a program in humancomputer interaction.

Why didn’t I use it?
 I needed too much resources
which I didn’t have (time,
teachers, bibliography)
• For an immediate effort, the
objective was, back then, to raise
interest.

What I did
 The creation of the Study Group


Interacción Humano Computadora (HCI)
Desarrollo de interfaces:
 Métodos formales
 Factores a considerar
 Elaboración de interfaces





Acceso a la Sala 5
Más tiempo de préstamo de revistas especializadas
Página de Web del Grupo de Estudio
Cuenta de correo especial
Acceso a los apuntes en mi máquina
Para la implementación de interfaces
Si estás interesado, se necesita:
a) Visual Basic
b) Visual C++
c) TCL/TKL


La implementación de las interfaces será determinada por el software que
podamos conseguir y/o correr en las computadoras


How it evolved
 Materials published on line
 Afterwards, self-organised by
students
 Weekly meetings, workshop style
 Continued for an advanced level.
CHI2001
UTM México
21
Results
 Great interest
 Better development of GUIs by
students involved in the Study
Group on further studies
 Conducted usability testing for
final software engineering projects.
CHI2001
UTM México
22
Goals achieved
 Actual consideration of HCI as part
of the syllabus in computing and
electronics BScs
 Creation of the SW Engineering
Master degree and its HCI courses
 The new usability lab
 One thesis, more to come.
CHI2001
UTM México
23
Conclusions
 Education lag of
HCI
 Its multiple
consequences
 The possible ways
in which this
problem could be
tackled
CHI2001
 My experience
 Goals achieved
 The actual
consideration of
HCI becoming
part of syllabus.

24
Reflections
 Not a complete, nor definitive work
 Create a precedent
 New ways to complete the syllabus
in computing and informatics
 Efforts multiplied in México.
CHI2001
UTM México
25
Wish list
 Cooperación, cooperação:
collaboration between us
 The new teachers
 Their formation
• Resources for this.
