 Hypertension to be the leading risk factor for
death in the world.
 One quarter of the world’s population has

 It is estimated the 1 million Canadians have
hypertension caused by excess dietary sodium.
 Lowering sodium consumption could reduce the
incidence of stroke and heart disease by 30%.


Adequate Intake (AI)
 The recommended average
daily intake, based on
observations, testing or
approximate estimates of the
nutritional intake or one or
more groups of apparently
healthy people who appear to
maintain an adequate level of
nutrition.

Tolerable Upper
Intake Level (UL)
 The highest continuous daily
intake of a nutrient that does
not appear to carry risks of
adverse health affects in
most members of a given
group, defined by stage of
life and sex.
