Why is a roller coaster scary?
Roller coasters are a series
of carriages which are
propelled along a track at
a range of speeds. They
are scary because the
speed changes and the
coaster can seem to ‘drop’
from great heights. This is
how it gathers speed.
Why is a roller coaster scary?
After a drop the roller coaster goes really fast
down a hill, which makes your tummy go and
you feel like you might fall out.
Then the roller coaster is in a dip and slowly
gets pulled up a hill, you get excited because
you know it’s going to go fast again, even if
you don’t want it to.
Why is a roller coaster scary?
Some roller coasters
have a corkscrew,
which can make you
experience a g-force
of up to 5g.
Two Motion Laws
For every action there is an equal and
opposite reaction.
An object will remain at rest unless acted
upon by an outside force. It will also
continue moving unless acted on by another
force, eg gravity or friction.
What motion laws keep it safe?
Centripetal force – provided by the track
acting as the centre directed force. It feels
like you are going to be pulled out, but the
force of the track on the carriage hold it in
place.
Centripetal force can be found using the
formula v=2 r/T
You need to modify the ride,
what would you do?
I would make the carriage tip you out at the
end onto some mattresses
How would you make sure it is
safe?
It would be safe because the mattresses
would break your fall.
