Describing Animals

Animal characteristics  WHAT ARE ANIMALS LIKE?

 Animals are made of cells.

 Animals reproduce.

 Animals move in some way  Animals grow and change.

 Animals eat food.

Animals are either…  Herbivorous – feeding on plants  Carnivorous – flesh eating  Omnivorous – eating both plants and animals

List of Herbivorous  rabbits,  deer,  cow,  horse,  cattle,  goat,  koala,  bunny,  fown,  calf,  zebra,  elephants  giraffe etc

List of Carnivorous Just to name a few  Lions  Tigers  Bears

List of Omnivores - Mammals  Bears  Hedgehogs  Opossums  Pigs  Raccoons  Rodents, including Chipmunks, Mice, Rats and Squirrels  Skunks  Sloths

Animals Groups  AMPHIBIANS  FISH  REPTILES  INSECTS  MAMMALS  BIRDS

AMPHIBIANS  Amphibians are cold-blooded.  Amphibians spend part of their lives under water and part of their lives on land.  Frogs and Toads

FISH  Fish are cold blooded.  Fish lay eggs.  Most fish are covered with scales.  They have fins not legs.  Fish live in water and breathe through gills.

Why is Classifying Animals helpful?

 Picture of dinosaur  Helps scientists observe patterns in animal structure, function, and behavior.

 Helps scientists organize information about animals that have lived in the past.
