FUD?
Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt
FUD was first defined by Gene Amdahl after he left IBM to found
his own company, Amdahl: "FUD is the fear, uncertainty, and
doubt that IBM sales people instill in the minds of potential
customers who might be considering Amdahl products."
Eric S. Raymond speaks more about this in The Jargon File:
"The idea, of course, was to persuade buyers to go with safe IBM
gear rather than with competitors' equipment. This implicit
coercion was traditionally accomplished by promising that Good
Things would happen to people who stuck with IBM, but Dark
Shadows loomed over the future of competitors' equipment or
software. After 1991 the term has become generalized to refer to
any kind of disinformation used as a competitive weapon."

USM Questions
 Why should we upgrade to Fusion?
 What is the Fusion rollout schedule?
 What is the driver for the development of Fusion? Is it increased functionality in the apps
or simply a new approach to technology?
 Will the PeopleSoft Internet Architecture be replaced? How does Fusion affect the
development toolkit of PS?
 Will we have to buy new hardware?
 Will we need to change/upgrade my database? What is the Oracle stance on support for
SQL server?
 What does "end-of life" for PeopleSoft products really mean?
 What commitment will Oracle make to assure that the transition to Fusion is more of an
upgrade than a completely new implementation?
 Will Oracle actively support the Higher Ed Users Group? Will Oracle continue to support a
separate higher education annual conference?
 What input will clients have in the discussion of which functionalities will go into Fusion
from PeopleSoft and Oracle apps?

Questions
•What kind of communication mechanisms will Oracle have in place to keep clients up to date
on its decision making in this area?
•Where is the official place to learn about Fusion? www.oracle.com/peoplesoft/index.
•Are there any higher ed institutions signed on to be a Beta Site? Who are they? What is their
implementation schedule?
•Can we see the Product documentation, a demonstration of the Fusion system before we
pay for it?
•If the development of Fusion products takes longer than anticipated, what adjustments will
be made to the PeopleSoft product retirement schedule for 8.9/9.0? Will there be an upgrade
path from 8.9 directly to Fusion without going to 9.0?
•What commitment will the institutions have to make in terms of staffing, costs, timelines,
readiness, etc? When will we know what impacts this transition will have on institutional
budgets?
•Will we need consultants to assist me?
•When can our people be trained, and what training do they need? Functional? Technical?
•What product set is Oracle currently selling to the Higher Education Market?

So What FUD Is On The Street?
 Fusion is Confusion
– It’s a new technology and a new paradigm, we have a track record of
bringing our customers along to the latest technology with 80% in
eBusiness suite customers on the latest release.
– 10 years ago higher education was slowly accepting the fact that
client server technology was NOT risky Bleeding Edge technology.
Oracle will continue to provide our customer with advance business
solutions supporting by proven Leading Edge technology driven by
market, competition and technical advances.
– We are providing more insight into our technology and development
plans than any other vendor at the risk or sharing proprietary and
competitive knowledge

28
So What FUD Is On The Street?
 Fusion will require a re-implementation
– Oracle is committed and has a proven track record of providing
upgrade paths successfully migrating our clients to the most current
technology release
– Oracle has adopted PeopleSoft Total Ownership Experience program
which lead to:
» 40% Less time for vanilla application upgrades
» 25% Less time for customized application upgrades
» 80% Fewer steps to apply maintenance updates
» 34% Fewer incoming calls per customer
» 44% Less time to resolve and close support cases
