Tredington Primary School Parents Information Evening What can you expect in KS2?

Friends Learning Together

Our children are well mannered, polite and supportive of others.

In KS2 we aim to help the children develop independence and resilience.

They are responsible for their own:

Friendship groups begin to play a major part in your child’s day. Support them to understand that every day is a fresh start.

Our children are considerate towards each other.

Encourage your child to talk about their day.

How can you support your child in KS2?

Targets

Throughout the year your child will have targets in Literacy, Numeracy, Spelling and Reading. These are stuck at the front of their homework books so that the children can use them at all times and to let you know what we are concentrating on in each area.

Name I can...

…add or subtract any 3 digit numbers

I should...

…write a fact family using + - = I may use decimal places in my fact family

I could....

...continue a number sequence Look. Think. Check!

Log in details

Your child will have their own log in details for My Maths, Coding and possibly many more as the year progresses. To support them their log in details will be stuck inside their home reading record. Please be aware that all our computers in school have active filters. When using the computers at home please ensure your child has an adult supporting them- to keep them safe.

Reading

Children in KS2 still need to read every night to an adult. The big difference for you is they can now chat knowledgably about their books. Enjoy this time, relax and discuss what the words mean. They can read the text but do they know what it means? What do they think will happen next? Why has the author used that word? Where else could you use it? Look for the humour…feel the emotions…have they read a book that makes them cry?

Vary the text type…

Encourage your child to read anything… • Poems • Newspaper articles • cbbc newsround clips • Instructions for their games • Code instructions • Favourite books

Maths

My Maths is used throughout KS2, as an integral part of the lesson and often set for homework. Initially, the children may need support getting onto the site but once they are up and running, they should be able to do their homework independently. There are also games and extra activities which can be played here.

Maths Magician

Core skills are essential to the development of your child’s learning. This site is used throughout the school to develop pace and accuracy. Encourage them to practise at home.

Big Maths – What is it all about?

This is our most successful strategy so far to develop the speed and accuracy of core skills in Maths.

The children practise this every day…please help them to practise at home if it is sent home.

Supporting your child…

Please ask if there is anything that you would like us to explain.

What is School Speak?

Your child will be given a variety of opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills using : Talk partners/chatter chums, songs and games, Quiz time, drama, debates and oral presentations.

Children are expected to explain, discuss and expand upon each other’s ideas. They should be able to present their ideas and are given frequent opportunities to present to larger audiences as well as within school. School speak is when they develop and practise using specific vocabulary. Your child will be encouraged to be a confident, articulate speaker able to express their opinions, hopes and aspirations. Please encourage your child to give an informed opinion and ask questions.

Subject Specific Vocabulary

The key to learning is being able to listen, think and question. Encourage your child to speak clearly and say what they mean…often it takes time and practise. Let them have fun using ‘big’ words…give them a chance to share their learning.

Web sites

The web has so much to offer…homework will often include a recommended website for the week.

Can you share great web sites or apps that you have found?
