Greek Alphabet
• There are 24 letters in the Greek
alphabet, which was borrowed from the
Phoenicians in the 8th century BC
• The Greek language is descended from
Indo-European and appeared in Greece
about 1900 BC
• There are several dialects; the easiest to
master first is Attic, the dialect of the
region around Athens
Greek Alphabet
• Greek has 7 vowels which are classified
as being LONG or SHORT – longer
vowels should take “longer” to
pronounce than shorter vowels
• To mark a long vowel, use a MACRON – a
line drawn above the vowel:
–ā
• To mark a short vowel use a BREVE – a
“scoop” drawn above the vowel:
–ă
