Research Priority/Plan & Achievements
Mandate of IFGTB
To identify and evolve varieties of species used in
afforestation and social forestry that will contribute to
the national goal of achieving a growth of 3 to 4 cubic
meters of biomass per hectare per year within the
ecological considerations applicable to the area.
Thrust areas to accomplish the mandate
National
Assess the genetic variability, identify varieties within the forests of
Western and Eastern ghats and the Island forests, and work on the
indigenous species available in the forests for productivity enhancement,
biodiversity conservation besides working on selected exotic species of
high economic importance and contribute to livelihood enhancement and
the development of tree based enterprises and activities in the mandated
states. Thus IFGTB will also work on the problems faced by the forest
departments, industries and other stakeholders of the mandated states.
Regional
To attend to the research requirements of the states of Tamil Nadu and
Kerala and the Union Territories of Puducherry, A&N Islands and
Lakshadweep.
Thrust areas of Research
 Management and improvement of Forest Genetic Resources.

Achievements
• IFGTB has been identified as a centre for Forest Genetic Resources
Management Network.
• IFGTB has been carrying out systematic genetic improvement of 20
important tree species through establishment of Seed Stands, SPAs,
SSOs and CSOs to support TOF.
• IFGTB has been identified as the DUS centre for two forestry crops
namely Casuarina and Eucalyptus by the PPVFRA. Presently the
Institute is developing descriptors and DUS guidelines for teak and
Melia
• The concept of Community Seed Orchards and Industrial Seed
Orchards has been developed for decentralized seed production
• IFGTB supplies quality seeds and planting material to tree growers
and other end users to improve productivity of forests and plantations

Collaborative projects with Indian Paper Mills Association (IPMA), technical
consultancies with BILT Tree Tech Limited and Kerala Forest Department, have
been taken up.
The Country Report on the State of Forest Genetic Resources has been
prepared by IFGTB through a national consultative process Country Report
which provided inputs for SOW FGR released in June 2014.
MoEF has recognized the Institute as a Thematic ENVIS on Forest Genetic
Resources and Tree Improvement (FGR-TIP).
Tree Growers Mela was organized at IFGTB for farmers of Tamil Nadu for five
years (2009-2013) and Karshaka Mela for farmers of Kerala.
Networking initiatives of VVK and KVK and IFGTB have been taken up for
effective transfer of technologies to farmers.
