Introduction
What is a household?
A person or a group of persons
 who live together in the same housing unit,
 sharing the same housekeeping and catering
arrangements
 considered as one unit,
 and members acknowledge an adult (one
person) as the head

The head of the household is:
the person recognised as such by other
members of the household
the person responsible for the upkeep of the
household.
The demographic and socio-economic characteristics of
heads of households
help us to understand
household dynamics and standard of living of
household members.

 Estimated number of households is 6.6 million
 Mean household size for the country is 4.0
 Average household size in rural localities is higher
than average urban household size.
 Rural Savannah has the highest mean household
size of 5.5

SUMMARY…
 A higher proportion of households are headed by
males in Ghana and households with female
heads being older than male heads
 The mean age at first marriage is 22.6 years with
females marrying about four years earlier than
their male counterparts.
