DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM IN
ECONOMICS AND ENGINEERING
INTRODUCTION
• 2 options offered:
(a) BEng (Hons)/BA with a major in Economics; or
(b) BEng (Hons)/BSocSci (Hons) in Economics.
• Program is designed to be completed in 4½ years for BEng
(Hons)/BA and 5 years for Double Honours.
• Maximum candidature is six years.
1
DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM IN
ECONOMICS AND ENGINEERING
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVES
• Economics and Engineering complementary both in their
intellectual tools and in their objects of study
• Engineering - innovative and creative application of
mathematical and scientific principles to the creation of
products, technology and services for the good of humanity
• Economics - optimal choice and combinations of such
systems for the achievement of maximum wealth given the
society’s limited resources
2
DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM IN
ECONOMICS AND ENGINEERING
• Employers will value our graduates' combined working
knowledge of Engineering and Economics
• Conceived first and foremost as BEng(Hons)/BA
• Double Honours:
- an option for only a small group of students
- very strong in both disciplines
- keen to pursue a significant research (thesis) project
involving both engineering and economics.

DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM IN
ECONOMICS AND ENGINEERING
UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES
•
Requirements of each of the two majors are met; major
requirements are given priority over other requirements
•
Each degree has a substantial proportion (two thirds) of
modules dedicated exclusively to that degree;
•
Shared modules are carefully chosen and/or designed so
that they (i) properly contribute to both degrees and (ii) help
students explore the confluences between disciplines; and
•
The program is designed so that students may complete it in
a reasonable time

ADMISSION
Two routes for students to gain admission into the program:
(1) by direct application with relevant “A”-level or equivalent
qualifications OR
(2) by application in the FoE or FASS at the end of first year:
- Engineering students should read at least two Economics
modules in the first year. Similarly, FASS students must have read
at least two Engineering modules.
- Must have a minimum CAP of 4.0 and an A-level pass in Physics
(or equivalent) and Maths (or equivalent). An interview may be
required.

DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM IN
ECONOMICS AND ENGINEERING
EXIT
• Students can choose to leave the program or
• Students are required to leave if they fail to meet the
requirement of 4.0 CAP in the home faculty for any two
consecutive semesters
COORDINATION
• 2 staff members from each Faculty to serve on a joint
committee to coordinate the program.
Curriculum & Time Table Issues
• Students may seek the assistance of their own Departmental
administrators (Ms Lesley Poong, Office of UG Programs for
Common Engineering students).

GRADING AND DEGREE CLASSIFICATION FOR
BENG(HONS)/BA MAJOR IN ECONOMICS
• Separate computation of CAP for each degree
• BEng(Hons) Degree: 98 MC (Engineering Requirement) +
24 MC (common modules) + 12 MC (University Level
Requirement) = 134 MC
• BA Degree: 48 MC (FASS & Economics Requirements) +
24 MC (common modules) + 12 MC (University Level
Requirement) = 84 MC

GRADING AND DEGREE CLASSIFICATION FOR
BENG(HONS)/BSOCSCI(HONS) IN ECONOMICS
• Separate computation of CAP for each degree
• BEng(Hons) Degree: 82 MC (Engineering Requirement) +
40 MC (common modules) + 12 MC (University Level
Requirement) = 134 MC
• BSocSci (Hons) Degree: 68 MCs (Economics Requirements) +
40 MCs (common modules) + 12 MCs (University Level
Requirement modules) = 120 MCs
