PARENT UNIVERSITY
Parent Prep for Standardized Tests
What’s the Point?
Standardized tests help
educators determine which
skills students have
mastered and which ones
still need to be taught.
Status √
Here at school, testing
provides information on the
progress students are making
according to state –
mandated academic
standards.
ACADEMIC
PREPARATION
Academic Preparation
• Have a discussion with your child about their
academic performance (how he or she is
doing in school).
• Encourage your child to ask questions about
things not understood.
• Work with your child on his or her
homework until they are able to do it alone.
• Communicate with your child’s teacher(s).
• Encourage your child to set goals and
commit to doing well in school.
Academic Preparation
Use flash cards to review concepts and
vocabulary and multiplication facts.
Make sure your child eats and rests well
the night before the test.
Make sure your child is on time each
testing day.
Reduce anxiety by reminding your child
to do his or her best, but not with daily
reminders about expected performance.
TEST-TAKING
STRATEGIES
Test-Taking Strategies
 Read all directions carefully.
 Skim the questions so that you know
what to look for when reading the
passage. Mark the text.
 Skim selections to attempt at
identifying the main idea.
 Use the process of elimination on
multiple choice questions.
 If you are stuck on a question, move
on and return to it later.
