Library of the Future
A library database is an online resource
subscribed to by the library. The database
contains citations and, in some cases, full-text
articles and information from print sources
such as magazines, newspapers, journals, and
reference books.
There are two different types of databases to which the
library subscribes. These databases may be
multidisciplinary or subject-specific.
Article Databases
&
Reference Databases
Article Databases
An article database enables you to search through
thousands (sometimes millions) of different
magazines, journals and newspapers to find
articles on a particular topic. Some of the articles
you will find are Full Text, which means you can
read, download or print the entire article right
there online. Other times the database will only
provide you with an abstract, or summary of the
article. Other times, the database will only give
you a citation, which tells you where you can
find a print version of the article.
Reference Databases
Reference Databases provide reference
information (facts, statistics, background
information) from many different print
sources. For example, we subscribe to
Encyclopedia Britannica Online, which is
an online version of the 29-volume set of
print encyclopedias.
What’s the difference between
using a database and the internet?
Searching the Internet is like sticking your hand in a
"grab bag" of information
– what you get may or
may not be reliable
Databases are an online information service provided to
you by the Wilmington University Library - materials
come from publishers, so they have been
checked for accuracy and reliability

How do students become
information literate?
“A well-designed resource-based
assignment is an excellent teaching tool.
Effective assignments develop students’
research and information skills, critical
thinking abilities, and subject knowledge.”
(Terry Mech)
Environmental Issue Example
Week 1: Choose an environmental issue you care
about. (Browse the database “Opposing Viewpoints” for ideas).
– Submit to instructor for approval.
Week 2: Research the issue and find:
– 2 Magazine articles (“Academic Search Premier”)
– 2 Scholarly journal articles (“Master File Premier”)
– An advocacy web site (Google – limit to .org)
Turn in a list of references in APA style.
Week 3: Develop a pamphlet on the issue addressing:
– A description of the problem or issue
– Why the general public should care
– A possible solution
– Recommended action
Incorporate some points you learned from your research.
Information Literacy
English 101 Project to be converted to
electronic format and graded through a
Blackboard quiz

Literacy Daily) campaign

ID’s & Library Barcodes
Students no longer need to obtain a barcode
sticker from the library.
All new ID Cards have the student’s ID imprinted
on the card as a barcode.
NJ students and distance students may use their
Student ID number to request library materials
Daily CAMS to SIRSI patron load assures most
current active students included in library
system.
Faculty & staff still need barcode from library
until CAMS accomodates these statuses.

Copyright Basics
• Copyright provides the creators of original works
of authorship with a limited set of exclusive
rights to copy, distribute, and perform their
works.
• Purpose: “to benefit the public by
advancing the progress of science and the
useful arts”
• exemptions for users <fair use, making
copies, classroom use, etc.>
• public domain
Common Copyright Exceptions
Works in the public domain
Works created “for hire”
Works for which copyright has been
transferred
Fair use
Fair Use (in a Nutshell)
Recognizes the public's interest in using
copyrighted works to create new works
Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976
and the “Four Factors”:
– The purpose and character of the use, including
whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for
nonprofit educational purposes;
– The nature of the copyrighted work;
– The amount and substantiality of the portion used in
relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
– The effect of the use upon the potential market for or
value of the copyrighted work.
Fair Use Video on You Tube
Copyright and the “Open” Web
Copyright applies to all types of materials (text,
music, images, email, etc.) that might be posted on
the Internet
Copyright protection begins “the moment [that] ideas
are expressed as keystrokes”
The © symbol is not required of materials created
after 1989; the absence of the symbol on a Web site
does not suggest lack of copyright protection
The right to appropriate Web-based materials
(images, sound files, text) for use in your own
course or Web site (i.e., to create a “derivative
work”) is retained by the copyright holder
Four Factors in determining Fair
Use
The purpose and character of the use,
including whether such use is of a commercial
nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
2. the nature of the copyrighted work
3. the amount and substantiality of the portion
used in relation to the copyrighted work as a
whole
4. the effect of the use upon the potential market
for or value of the copyrighted work
1.
Rules of Thumb
1. Limit reserve materials to
single articles or chapters; several charts, graphs or
illustrations; or other small parts of a work
a small part of the materials required for the course
copies of materials that a faculty member or the library already
possesses legally (i.e., by purchase, license)
2. Include
any copyright notice on the original
appropriate citations and attributions to the source
a Section 108(f)(1) notice.
Rules of Thumb
3.
Limit access to students enrolled in
the class and administrative staff as
needed. Terminate access at the end of
the class term.
4.
Obtain permission for materials that
will be used repeatedly by the same
instructor for the same class.
Licensed Information
How you can use printed journals and
books is governed by copyright law
– Fair Use
– First Sale
How you can use (most) electronic
databases, journals, and books is
governed by a publisher’s contract with
the subscribing library
Typical License Guidelines
You may use the content only for noncommercial educational, clinical, or research
purposes
You may not share portions of the content in
excess of fair use with individuals who are not
affiliated with Wilmington U.
You may not systematically print or save
substantial portions of an electronic title (e.g.,
you cannot save an entire issue or volume of a
journal on your hard drive)
