• one-syllable adjectives (clean, new, cheap)
• two-syllable adjectives ending in -y or er (easy, happy, pretty, dirty, clever)

Exceptions in spelling when adding er / -est
• silent ‘e’ is dropped
– Example: late-later-latest
• final ‘y’ after a consonant
