North Topsail Elementary’s Vision
To establish a learning environment where all students achieve their highest
potential in a safe, supportive, and creative 21st century learning community.
North Topsail’s Mission
At North Topsail Elementary School, we will strive to create a student-centered
learning community that fosters responsible, healthy, 21st century citizens.
Plus Delta for the 2012-13 school
year to this point:
Plus:
Common Core has been implemented with fidelity through-out grade
levels. Our EC team has worked extremely hard to educate one student
that had been very disruptive to the education environment. His
behavior is under control We received a grant and put on the play “YES
VIRGINA”. Our SIP team had been the rudder to steer NTES this year.
Even though we have had challenges during our I/E block such as an I/A
that had a group was restraining a student, the process has been
beneficial . Moved several staff members to new grade levels to better
utilize their strengths. Formed a Leadership Multi-grade level class which
has been highly successful and the model for the county (also was
featured in the newspaper). North Topsail Elementary School will be
hosting a Science Night for our students and their families. THORP
Science support materials will be used. Egret Project, which I believe we
are going to call LifeTrack –Egrets (more on that in the future!).
Congratulations – we been selected as one of ten schools who will adopt
their own Great Egret to follow! Green Ribbon Award Winner for PBIS
schools!!
Plus
Monthly Literacy Parent Nights, on-going Friday notes, weekly Alert-now
messages, POWs, quarterly open forum parent meetings, Safety Committee
formation and monthly meetings, monthly PTA Board meetings and bimonth full PTA meetings, monthly PAC meetings. Spring Fling event, Fall
Festival Event, Talent Show at THS-(I showed off my lack of stage talent).
Reading of the Daily 5 book to better prepare myself, book study for the
staff “Interactive Think-aloud Lessons” by Oczkus (suggested by Lisa
Handline). Living Wax Museum. We plan to begin the “Watch-Dogs” program
under the direction of our safety committee. Added chess club to our afterschool line- up of tutoring, Science Olympiad, Battle of the Books, AllCounty Chorus practice, “Yes Virginia” practice, Girls on the Run and a boys’
running club. To allow for Reading 3D testing, our Encore and upper grade
teachers covered the K-3 teachers’ classes, so they could complete the
testing (At the suggestion of the Encore team and 5 th Grade). A camp-out
night for our families, a candle-light vigil in December. We also expanded our
Positive Student Referral program incorporating an Alert-Now Message to
the students’ parent. Much appreciated support from our Superintendent,
and central office.
Delta
Lack of staffing- high numbers of students in 5 th grade (28-30). Addition of a
new 1st grade class without an IA. (we had to shift our Title 1 IA who helped
out with a large portion of our progress monitoring). Also the on-going bus
concern- we now have 3 CDL licensed IAs, but as they drive all the MS/HS
routes, they miss up to 2 hours of instructional time at our school.
Summary
Though we have gone through some challenges this year (EC, relocation of
staff, high numbers with a high EC population in 5 th grade) our faculty has
truly grown together and done the utmost for our students each and every
day. As an Administration, we have worked to support, nurture and improve
our faculty through walk-throughs, meetings, trainings, observations and
our own Professional Development. I am proud of our faculty, students and
parents as we all work together to give the students of North Topsail the
very best education possible!
