recommended the awarding of six semester hours, or the
equivalent, for a score of 50* on the CLEP College Composition
and College Composition Modular examinations.
If colleges do not elect to supplement the Modular version of the
examination with the CLEP essay section or one of their own,
three semester hours of credit are recommended (for a score

How to Effectively
Change CLEP Policies
on Your Campus
Presented by:
Karen Witemeyer
Testing Coordinator
Abilene Christian University
Is Change Possible?
Yes!
Changes at ACU:

5 departments lowered required cuts scores
and/or expanded range of credit granted.

2 departments added a total of 5 new CLEP
exams to their policies which had never before
been available for credit at our university.
Department Chairs must
believe…
1.
2.
3.
4.
That reviewing their policy will be easy
and won’t take much of their time.
That the project is important enough to
invest the time that is required.
That updating their policy will make them
look good to university officials.
That any changes made will benefit their
students while still fulfilling their own
demand for academic excellence.
Research First

Obtain a list of your college or university’s top
recruiting competitors (15-20 is a good number).

Visit the Web sites of those schools and do a
search for “CLEP Policy”.

If you cannot find the information online, call the
school’s testing center.

Compile the cut scores and hours of credit to be
earned into a spreadsheet organized by subject.

Create Presentation Binders

Print out Test Information Guides for each exam
applicable to your target department. These are
available on the CLEP Administrators Web site.

Separate each guide with a binder divider and
label each section with the test name.

Include the spreadsheet of competing CLEP
policies at the front.

Include a response sheet.

Make it look professional and add a personal,
customized cover letter.
Follow-Up

Give them plenty of time initially to look over
your materials.
 After a couple months, send out a reminder
e-mail. Keep it personal. Don’t mass mail.
Send each reminder out individually.
 Invite questions and comments.
 Send “thank you” e-mails to each department
as you receive their response sheets.
 Finally, give a deadline.
Celebrate and Advertise
 Celebrate
your successes and accept the
areas that did not change.
 Advertise
your “New Lower Cut Scores”
and “Expanded Credit Offerings” on your
Web site.
