Scope & Structure of the
ECEIM Credentials Committee
• establish guidelines to assist
applicants applying to sit the
diploma examination
• receive, review, and approve
the candidacy of applicants
• establish and administer
Diplomate re-accreditation
system
• 3 members
• Usually serving 3 years
• Annual cycle of activity
begins in March
• Applications reviewed in
July/August
• Annual tasks completed
by October

Publication Requirements
• In future years, candidates will only be allowed to enter the
exam when they have completed the publications requirements
• Diplomates approved a proposal to modify our publication
requirements
• The credentials committee has composed a list of approved
journals and a detailed statement defining the standard of
original research papers we require
• Diplomates and residents can find the information on publication
requirements and approved journals on our website
• Supervisors, please advise residents not to send copies of
ineligible pieces of work such as book chapter or reviews as
they are not necessary and the packages can become too large.

Training requirements
• There are two training phases:
– 12 month rotating internship or equivalent
– Minimum 3 years of speciality training (residency)
• Our training brochure describes in detail what a resident
must have completed to satisfy the need for a “12 month
rotating internship or equivalent” BEFORE starting a
residency
• Supervisors must note this requirement when they appoint
residents

Clinical Rotations and training in
related disciplines
• The number of weeks on medicine clinical
rotations and training rotations in related
disciplines are described in detail in the Training
Brochure
• The requirements for “standard programmes” and
“alternative programmes” are identical - standard
is completed continuously over a minimum of 3
years, alternative is completed intermittently over
a maximum of 7 years
• Training documents must contain signatures from
all supervising diplomates

Case log

Our Case Categorisation has been simplified and new forms designed.
The case log requirements are described in the training brochure
The case log forms are on the webpage.\
Residents who have already started a log using the old system, MUST
up-date their log using the new forms and categorisation
The supervisor is responsible to verifying that the log is accurate and
true: The Paper copy must have EVERY page signed by every
Diplomate listed on that page to confirm this.

Establishing a residency &
Appraisals by ECEIM committees
Get “institutional approval” from Education Committee: lasts 6 years,
max number depends on caseload (min 150/yr/res) and no. of
diplomates(2 per dip)
Appoint a resident who has already completed an internship or equivalent
Send “resident enrolment form” to Education Committee

• individuals who are internationally recognised
in their own right as outstanding in the field of
equine internal medicine
– The exam application process for this people on
our webpage
– These people are required to complete a caselog
of the same numbers and types of cases that are
required of residents (see training brochure for this
information)

• individuals who completed a training
programme that is internationally recognised
as comparable to a ECEIM approved
residency programme.

Re-accreditation
• In order to maintain the right to the title of “European
Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine”, EBVS requires
that every diplomate undergoes a re-accreditation
process every five years
• The EBVS executive committee will shortly require all
colleges to adopt a uniform points-based system
• ECEIM’s ten founding Diplomates are due for reaccreditation in 2007
• Every Diplomate is responsible for submitting their reaccreditation package to the Credentials Committee by
30 June on the relevant year and no reminders will be
sent

– If you can’t work out when you are due, contact the Chair of the
Credentials committee

Uniformity across all
European colleges
• the details of our current point system are listed on
our website (diplomates page)
• EBVS will shortly produce rules on point allocation so
it may need to be modified slightly
• EBVS have been asked for more information on how
they require us to deal with issues such as career
breaks, research sabbaticals, illness etc
• Likely include establishing one or more category of
diplomate
– DipECEIM (non-practising), DipECEIM (retired)
