INTRODUCING
the
SEALECK
Bio-Containment
Door & Window
Systems
BSL2 to BSL4
What are BSL levels for?
Bio-containment levels or BSL levels vary with the need for containment.
These categories apply and relate to the risk imposed on humans and/or animals.
 BSL1 = Low risk, basic good laboratory practice
 BSL2 = Organisms that are not likely to cause community risk at large but can
potentially cause individual risk in the laboratory. Therefore laboratory containment
practices are more important than in BSL1
 BSL3 = Organisms that may cause serious risk to an individual, but for which
effective preventative measures or treatments are available. There is some risk if
these organisms spread to the community.
 BSL4 = Life threatening risk to individuals and the community at large. Effective
treatment and preventative measures are not usually available.
How are BSL ratings applied?
Australian and worldwide standards are used to guide laboratory managers and
owners of facilities where risk might apply, on the correct procedures that should
be used in the building and operation of such facilities.
In Australia the relevant standards are AS2243 part3 or AS2982 part1
 However there are no specific details in standards that define specifications for
doors used in such a facility. However, performance criteria is written into the
standards providing information on the performance rating expected of the facility.
 It is this performance criteria that is then used to determine the individual
specifications for doors to meet each rating level.
How to select the product best suited to your facility
 Because there are no specific specifications for doors to suit particular BSL
ratings, we recommend that you examine the features offered in each BSL level
in our range and select the mix of features best suited for your needs.
For example, you propose to build a BSL2 level facility and you intend to
perform frequent fumigations within the facility – in this instance we suggest
you select our seamless stainless steel door product which is featured under our
BSL3 level.
BSL2 Door products
BSL2 is generally the level requiring the lowest risk of contamination where our door
products are used and are typically specified in the following areas:
 Hospital room/ward entrances
 Drug production facilities
 Low level sterile environments
 Note the alternative finishes of
powder coated steel or linished
stainless steel
 Door core is constructed of totally
inorganic materials and clad in 0.6mm to
1.6mm thickness steel or stainless steel.
 Edge seam is sealed to minimise
entrapment of contaminants
 Doors and windows are supplied to site
pre-hung in the frame (complete with
hardware/ironmongery if required) and
ready to install, minimising site adjustment
 Door frames are typically three
sided without a threshold, with a
variety of frame profiles and fixing
methods to suit most construction
techniques.
 A standard seal system is
provided for the complete
perimeter of the door frame and
includes a retracting seal at the
threshold.
 Two piece window and view
panels with bevelled edges aid
cleaning and minimise
entrapment.
 Rectangular or square
vision panels can be supplied
pre-glazed in various sizes
pre-fitted to the door.
 Two part
aluminium –
BSL2 only
 Stainless
steel – BSL2
or BSL3
BSL2 Door Options
Due to the wide range of size and option requirements, all products are made to order.
 Single doors up to a maximum of 2.95 metres high X 1.45 metres wide or
 Double doors up to a maximum of 2.95 metres high X 2.9 metres wide
 Frames are available in 3 sided form or 4 sided if a step-over threshold is acceptable
and in a range of profiles to suit most walling designs.
 Seals – A range of seals are available to suit air pressure, vermin and insect control
situations.
 Finishes – Powder coated steel or linished stainless steel
 Hardware – Doors are prepared for or come complete with a full range of lock, panic
exit and other architectural hardware.
BSL3 Door Products
BSL3 ratings generally require more frequent cleaning and fumigation and a
much higher risk. Typical instances where BSL3 level is required are as
follows:
 Specific pathogen free (SPF) environments where mice are grown for
research are generally operated at an increased pressure to prevent outside
contamination entering the laboratory; air leakage goes out but does not
enter.
 Animal health research facilities, for example where disease research is
envisaged. In these environments the laboratory is operated at a negative
pressure compared to the atmospheric pressure to prevent the accidental
release to the environment of harmful bacteria.
 For this level, Sealeck manufacture a fully
seamless stainless steel door leaf clad with
1.6mm 304 grade S/S and matching 1.6 or
2.0mm stainless steel frame
 All doors and
frames are
linished
 Door frames can be either three sided
(or four sided with a step-over threshold
for greater containment capability) in a
range of profiles to suit most construction
methods.
 Doors and windows are supplied to site prehung in the frame (complete with
hardware/ironmongery if required) and ready to
install, minimising site adjustment
 A standard seal
system is provided
for the three sided
frame and includes
a retracting seal at
the threshold.
 A continuous perimeter frame
seal is optional for four sided
frames with step-over threshold
and incorporates radiuses at the
corners for superior sealing.
 Circular, rectangular or
square vision panels
(windows) can be supplied
pre glazed.
 Stainless steel rectangular
or square windows are
available in various sizes to
suit BSL3.
 Stainless steel circular
windows are available with a
clear view of 500mmto suit
BSL3 or BSL4 applications.
BSL3 Door Options
Due to the wide range of size and option requirements, all products are made to order.
 Single doors up to a maximum of 2.95 metres high X 1.45 metres wide
 Frames are available in 3 sided form or 4 sided if a step-over threshold is acceptable
and in a range of profiles to suit most walling designs.
 Seals – A range of seals are available to suit air pressure, vermin and insect control
situations.
 Finishes – Linished stainless steel
 Hardware – Doors are prepared for or come complete with a full range of lock, panic
exit and other architectural hardware.
BSL4 High Containment Doors
BSL4 is the highest level requiring absolute containment and facilities that
operate at BSL4 level may include facilities outlined previously for BSL3 but
where the specific research being undertaken poses greater risk to both the
environment and the staff and where greater containment requirements are
necessary
 For this level, Sealeck manufacture an
inflatable seal, high containment door in
seamless stainless steel
 Porthole style vision panel
with invisible fixings.
 Typically, this door is connected into the clients
building access control system and as a result is
not supplied with a control system to operate the
door.
 In special circumstances, and particularly for
small sites, Sealeck can offer an air supply and
control system to operate the door.
 The door and frame system fits into a
recess that must be cast into the floor or
can be surface mounted for locations where
stepping over the threshold can be
tolerated.
 The door and frame system
is supplied in standard form
with an electromagnetic lock
and wiring, with an airline for
connection to a client provided
air supply and control system.
 Electromagnetic
lock holds door in
closed position while
the inflatable seal
activates
 Solid stainless steel handles
welded at the surface on both
sides prevent air leakage
through the door.
 Stainless steel block
hinges with height
adjustment
BSL4 Door Options
Due to the wide range of size and option requirements, all products are made to order.
 Single doors up to a maximum of 2.40 metres high X 1.25 metres wide
 Finished in linished stainless steel
 Designed to accept computerised access wiring and laboratory air control systems
 Available with a step over threshold or flush fitting for a preformed floor recess
 Frame profiles are designed to suit most walling systems to prevent air leakage
