    Then we can definitely learn a new use of the verb. The expression “tener que”! “Tener que” is one way to express obligation or a necessity. It can be easily translated as “someone has to do something.”

Tener que …        “Tener que” + infinitive Remember, when using the expression always make sure that “tener” is conjugated to the subject of the sentence!

Tengo que… Tuve que… Tienes que… Tenía que… “Tener” is conjugated but the verb following “que” is not!

Tener que … I have to eat the vegetables.

Tengo que comer los vegetales/las verduras.

You have to do the homework.

Tienes que hacer la tarea.

They have to buy a magazine.

Ellos tienen que comprar una revista.

I had to go to the party last night.

Tuve que ir a la fiesta anoche.

You had to go to the beach yesterday.

Tuviste que ir a la playa ayer.

I was supposed to go to the office.
