
Give credit where due
Let someone follow in your research footsteps
 In-Text Citation, Parenthetical References: An
abbreviated reference to a particular resource used in
a particular part of your paper.



Put it right into the body of your research paper
This points readers to your bibliography
It’s not just for quotes!
 Citation: A single reference to a source used, but into
a consistent format (APA, MLA, etc.).

Used in databases to show abbreviated form of an
article, too.

Composing a Bibliography & In-Text
Citations
Bibliography, aka References, aka Works Cited

Always put citations in alphabetical order by the first
letter of the citation, regardless of format.
In-Text Citations, aka Parenthetical References





End your sentence with this (before the period).
Not just quotations; any time the idea isn’t yours!
Rule of Thumb: Use the first word of your citation
(author or title) for your in-text citations.
 Bring your reader to your bibliography!
MLA: (Name pg#)
 Example: (Gibson 85)
APA: (Name, pub.year)
 Example: (Gibson, 2006)
Quick Tips and Advice
 Advice while writing your paper:


Create your bibliography as you work.
Insert your In-Text Citations while composing your
paper.
 Base these after your bibliography.
 Use a citation generator with caution


Some databases will create your citations for you.
Some websites (listed on the “Cite Your Sources”
page) will generate citations too!
Check the style that the generator uses against the
style in your citation guides.
 Don’t Wait Till the Last Minute!!!!!!
