Running Diagnostics
• 4 Methods to run:
– Press Ctrl+D
– Click the Tools Menu
and click Run Return
Diagnostics
– While on a form in a
return, press F10
twice.
– From the Find a form
list, press F10.

• Electronic Filing Errors
– You must correct all electronic filing errors prior to
e-filing a return.
– Clicking on the error message link will take you to
the field in the form that needs to be corrected.

Managing Declaration
Control Numbers
• Uniquely identifies the return as required by
the IRS.
• Remains unchanged
• Duplicate DCNs can occur
– Stand alone Computers need the DCN set to start
at unique numbers (one set at 10,000, next one set
at 20,000 and so on) to avoid duplicates.

Resetting DCNs
• If a return is rejected
for Duplicate DCN:
– Click the Tools menu,
and then click
Utilities/Setup
Options.
– Click the File menu
and click Reset DCN
for Return.

State Electronic Filing
• TaxWise supports the IRS Federal/State e-file
program.
– States that participate in the Federal/State e-file are
sometimes referred to as JELF states.
• Joint Electronic Filing
• Ability to prepare up to 9 state returns with federal
return

IRS State Only
• A state return that can be sent separate from
the federal.
– State return was rejected
• The state return is input after the federal return.
– Taxpayer has multiple state returns.
– Part-year or nonresident state returns
– Taxpayer or spouse file jointly on the federal but
separate on the state.
– Hawaii and Oklahoma do not participate.

Creating Efiles for Fed/State
Returns
• If you print the return before creating the efile,
the DCN will not print on the 8453.
• During Diagnostics, TaxWise determines
– Whether a federal e-file should be created.
– Which state return should be attached to the
federal.
– Which state(s) qualify to be filed as State Only.

Only/Stand Alone Returns
• The federal return must be on your computer
or network.
• Creating E-files for Stand Alone States
– TaxWise asks if you want to make the Stand-Alone
state electronic file.

Transmitting Efiles
• You must create electronic files for one or
more returns
• Your internet connection must be active.
• Your printer must be turned on and ready to
print the Declaration Control Report.

Steps to Transmit
• Access the communication link in a number of
ways.
• Select Send Returns to the Electronic Filing
Center.
• Select the returns you want to send.
• Click Send.
• Verify the returns included in the DCR are the
returns you want to send.

Getting Acknowledgements
• Access the Communications Menu.
• Select Get Fed/State Acks Mail, Updates from
Electronic Filing Center.
• Click Get
• When the communication session ends, click
Close.

Processing
Acknowledgements
• Process all Acknowledgements and e-mail
files.
• Reprocessing/Reprinting Acknowledgements
– Click the Reports menu and click
Acknowledgements.
– TaxWise displays the Filter Criteria Dialog Box.
– Select the Acknowledgement you want to print.

Filtering the Ack List
• By default the acknowledgement list filters out
the processed acks.
• To change the filter criteria:
– Use the same steps as Reprocessing/Reprinting
Acknowledgements.
– Filters remain in effect until you open this dialog
box again and make changes.

Correcting Rejected Returns
• Open the return.
• Correct the errors
• Run Diagnostics and create a new e-file.
• Transmit the return.

Rejected State Returns
• Federal/State E-file
– If the federal return is rejected then the state will not
be sent.
– Correct the mistakes and re-create new efiles for
the federal and state.
• Direct States
– If a state rejects a direct state return, you can resend it to the Electronic Filing Center.
