Jam 2:19 You believe that there
is one God, you do well; even
the demons believe and
tremble.
Heart
Rom 10:10 For with the heart
one believes unto
righteousness…
What Does Justification
Mean?
Justification is a positive declaration of
God of the sinner that he/she is made
righteous, because he/she is “IN Christ”.
The Means Of Justification
Rom 5:8 But God commends His love
toward us in that while we were yet
sinners Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now
justified by His blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through Him.
Justification Actualized
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 being justified freely by His
grace through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus;
Rom 3:25 whom God has set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in His blood
Rom 3:24 being justified freely by His
grace through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus;
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a
man is justified by faith without the works
of the Law.
Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Rom 5:18 Therefore as by one offense
sentence came on all men to
condemnation, even so by the
righteousness of One the free gift came to
all men to justification of life.
Gal 3:2 This only I would learn from you:
Did you receive the Spirit by works of the
law, or by hearing of faith?
Gal 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun
in the Spirit, do you now perfect yourself
in the flesh?
Why Must We Be Justified?
Because God Is Perfect – One sin is fatal
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God,
Why Must We Be Justified?
Because God Is Just – He Must punish sin
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed
from Heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men,
Justification By Faith And Works
A Square Peg In A
Round Hole
Jam 2:21 Was not Abraham our
father justified by works when he
had offered Isaac his son upon the
altar?
Jam 2:22 Do you see how faith
worked with his works, and from
the works faith was made
complete?
Jam 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled
which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was
imputed to him for righteousness, and he was
called the friend of God."
Jam 2:24 You see then how a man is
justified by works, and not by faith only.
Gen 15:5 And He brought him outside and
said, Look now toward the heavens and
count the stars, if you are able to count
them. And He said to him, So shall your
seed be.
Gen 15:6 And he
believed in Yahweh.
And He counted it
to him for
righteousness.
Quoted Three Times In The New Testament
Rom. 4:3
Context – saved by faith alone (read 4:24,25)
Gal. 3:6
Context – saved by faith alone (read 3:1-5)
Jam. 2:23 –
Context – what accompanies true faith
Important Point
Abraham was declared righteous by God
the moment he believed. Gen. 15:6
Isaac was offered up as a sacrifice
approximately 32 years later.
Show Me Faith
Versus
Saving Faith
Jam 2:18 But someone will say, You have
faith, and I have works. Show me your
faith without your works, and I will show
you my faith from my works.
Context – 2:14-17 – “If a man say”
James refers to one who sees a brother
destitute and has the means to help but
does nothing to help the brother.
Dead Faith
Jam 2:26 For as the body without the
spirit is dead, so faith without works is
dead also.
Working Faith
Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus
neither circumcision nor
uncircumcision has any
strength, but faith working
through love.
Rom 7:4 …even to Him
raised from the dead, that
we should bring forth fruit
to God. (see Jn. 15:8)
The Fruit of
Righteousness James 3:18
The Fruit Of Praise
Heb. 13:15
The fruit of Giving - Phil. 4:17
The fruit of labor - Phil. 1:22
The fruit of the Spirit - Gal. 5:22
If the tree
has no
fruit…
then something
is wrong with
the root.
Conclusion
“Works” will always accompany genuine
faith, but justification before God is by
faith alone in the death, burial, and
resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ.
