PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features- Water Supply Mainly the rivers Damodar, and Ajoy are forming important surface water sources of the district. Majority of the households are depending on ground water for drinking through own tube wells rather than depending upon those available for community as a whole. Even in rural areas, the demand for piped water facility has been increasing. Majority of people in urban areas are satisfied with the availability of potable water, whereas it is comparatively low in rural areas. People prefer exclusive use of drinking water sources rather than depending upon common facilities Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features- Water Supply General Distribution of Persons in BPA by sources of Potable Water Well (comm) Tank 0.4 0.1 Well (own) 0.3 Tube well (comm) 17.1 River, canal 0.9 Not reported 1.6 Tap (own) 18.3 Tube well (own) 43.6 Tap (comm) 17.7 Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features- Water Supply Comparative assessment on average dependency of Urban(Municipal) and Rural population on source of potable water 60 59.5 Urban Rural % of population 43 40 30.6 25.5 18.2 20 8 5.3 2.1 2.7 0.3 0.5 0 0.7 1.4 2.1 0.1 0 tap ) wn o ( ( tap m co m ) w (o n) om (c ll e l l ew we b e b tu tu m ) ll we ) wn o ( w ell m (co m) k, n a t l na a c ted or ep tr no Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features- Water Supply Comparative representation of the ‘access to sources of drinking water by Urban(Municipal) and Rural populations 90 84.6 Urban Rural % of population 66.7 60 30 11.1 6.1 6.2 6.4 3.8 2.2 8.5 2.7 0 Nil less than 10 m between 10-25 m between 26-50 m greater than 51 m Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features-Sanitation Most crucial problem existing in BPA is the poor sanitation and drainage facilities available. It is observed that nearly one-third of the total number of households live in premises without any drainage facility Pucca drains are limited only to average 9.13% households in rural areas, whereas 62.56% have no facilities at all. 80 Urban 68.77 Rural % households 62.56 40 21.08 9.13 17.98 6.06 8.46 2.82 1.96 1.15 0 underground open pucca open katcha Nil not reported Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features-Drainage Most of the drainage channels are stagnant due to solid waste dumping. It is learned that more than 50% of the households, even in many urban locations are facing water logging. Road side dumping and burning of wastes are common. No specific sites are exclusively reserved for solid waste disposal and people are at liberty to dump wherever free and open spaces are available Dumping of solid waste on the road side; a common scene. Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Department of Architecture and Regional Planning , IIT, Kharagpur Salient features-Solid Waste Management Exiting system of solid waste management, suffers much, due to the unplanned and ill managed traditional practice of collection and transportation of solid waste. Surely, solid waste management is one of the important areas demanding urgent attention. Stagnation of drainage channels due to dumping of solid waste.
