GASTRONOMIC CITIES – URBACT II 2007 - 2013

Gastronomic Cities : City strategy on Gastronomy as a tool for the development of tourism and new jobs.

Funding Programme: European Territorioal Cooperation Programme

URBACT II 2007 – 2013 which has the aim to enable the exchange of experiences and good practices and lesson learnt among european cities promoting sustainble urban development.

Gastronomic Cities

has been funded in the last call of Urbact II 2007 – 2013 aimed at

funding pilot network s of European Cities

, among them one has the good practice on a theme of common interest (in the case of GASTRONOMIC CITIES is gastronomy has a strategic tool of territorial development) and transfer it to the others thorugh an “ad hoc” methodology.

Project objective

Transfer the good practice implemented in Burgos to the other Cities of the network, analyzing the city strategy on Gastronomy a key instrument and leverage for the development of territory in line with

EU objectives of: Intelligent, Sustainable and Inclusive growth .

Burgos has recognized

gastronomy as a strategic axis for the development of new jobs and employment,

setting it in the local agenda as tool to promote tourism, culture and City Economy. Burgos defined a strategic plan

improve the image and the perception of the city at national and international level. (Burgos2020) and implemented actions to

The positioning of the city as a cultural destination and thanks to its cultural heritage supported a new

action strategy linking eno-gastronomy and tourism.

Action implemented in Burgos:

- Drafting of the strategic plan Burgos 2020 - Marketing plan and new logo/image of the Cityt - Promotional Campaign and event DEVORA, es Burgos! - “Burgos Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2013” - Public/Private Partnership for the initiative management - Stakeholders engagement process and citizens involvement in the definition of strategy and actions. Application to “Eurpean City of Culture 2016” (among finalist )

4 – 5 MARCH 2014 BURGOS DEEP DIVE – Technical visit to the city providing the practice

(2 days technical visit where the representatives of all the “receiving cities” will see on the ground the initiative and the process followed. The programme included peer face to face interviews with the local stakeholders, decision-makers)

Agenda have foreseen: Presentation of Tipicità Made in Marche Festival – Visit of the exhibition Presentation of CAMPAGNA AMICA KM0 Initiatives Show cooking Territories and Borghi Integrated Development Model Relevance of high quality training for the development of eno gastronomy sector ERDF/ESF/RDP 2014 – 2020 funds for tourism and gastronomy Exchange and networking with other cooperation Project (locfood/wellfood) Pappa fish initiative (funded by EFF) QM (Marche Quality brand)

Innovative features detected by the partners:

Strong cooperation with regional government and use of ERDF funds Supportive mechanism for development of gastronomy integrated approach (e.g. Quality brand QM Marche) Partnerhsip of Local Authorities and Local Producers Involvement of academic fields Strong support and promotion of organic products Development of a local products that act as promotion element: organic, slow food based on identity City logo / Image starting process started.

To be improved...very useful suggestion for us:

Enhance street activities and citizens participation to the event especially in the City Center Improve the role of Ho.re.ca Sector (especially restaurants) in the food, tourism and territory promotion Enhance the role of the local chef and their links with local producers Improve marketing and communication strategy Take as a city the leadership for gastronomy as urban development leverage Better linkd with cultural events (opera festival, etc...)

10 – 11 APRIL 2014 1st staff exchange “DEVORA ES BURGOS”

Participation to the initiatives “Devora, es Burgos’, an integrated promotional campaign developed in a weekend format, including special prices for menus, tapas, hotels, shuttles connecting the city with wineries from Ribera del Duero and Arlanza ,wine fair, show-cooking by Burgos chefs, children space on food culture,…everything connected to special prices to cultural resources: Book Museum , Burgos Cathedral and Museum of Human Evolution.

7 – 8 MAY 2014 2nd staff exchange for the CHEF inBurgos

(Workshop, training practical sessions held by the Burgos Chef – CENTRAL ROLE OF THE CHEF IN THE PROJECT)

10 – 11 JUNE 2014 3rd staff exchange “O KM ” – The relevance of quality raw materials

(Presentation of GPI products and quality brans (Tierra de Sabor – Burgos Alimenta) traditional product (Morcilla) and innovative (birra dolina), on the field visit (Valle di Caderechas – Cantine “Portia”)
