About the Title of the Award:
• It is named after the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen
(1805-1875).

novels and travel books.
Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875):

• Nomination: Made by IBBY National Section
• International Award:
(1) IBBY National Sections from 32 countries separately submit the nominees from the

illustrator from their own country.
(3) Criterion: Living authors and illustrators who have made lasting contribution to
children’s literature

exceptional aesthetic qualities in writing or illustration, including
treatment of plot, character, style, structure or language and for a
portrayal of universal themes with lasting human virtues.
• Candidates who have been highly commended may be proposed
again after an interval of five years. During the first years, the jury
listed “runnersup,” then “highly commended,” and, in the last few
years, “author or illustrator finalist” for the books that were in the
final consideration.
• The Award consists of a gold medal and a diploma, presented at a
festive ceremony during the biennial IBBY Congress.

What is IBBY?
The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY)
• It is a non-profit organization which represents an international network of
people from all over the world who are committed to bringing books and
children together.
• It was founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1953
• Today, it is composed of more than seventy National Sections all over the
world, including IBBY Canada, IBBY Ireland, IBBY Australia.
IBBY Organization
• IBBY is committed to the principles of the International Convention on the Rights of
the Child, ratified by the United Nations in 1990.
• One of its main proclamations is the right of the child to a general education and to
direct access to information.
• Executive Committee: ten people from different countries and a President, elected
biennially by the National Sections at a General Assembly during the IBBY Congresses.
• The daily management of IBBY's affairs is conducted from its Secretariat in Basel,
Switzerland.
The Membership in IBBY
• National Sections
• Supporting Members
• Individuals
• All forms of membership have to be approved by the IBBY Executive
Committee.
IBBY has five key aims:
• to promote international understanding through children's books
• to give children everywhere the opportunity to have access to books with high literary
and artistic standards
• to encourage the publication and distribution of quality children's books, especially in
developing countries
• to provide support and training for those involved with children and children's literature
• to stimulate research and scholarly works in the field of children's literature
Honor List:
• Besides the award, IBBY publishes a biennial “Honor List”of excellent new
children’s books, which are selected by the different national sections of IBBY,
and recognize excellence in writing, illustration and translation of children’s
books.
• It provides insight into the diverse cultural, political and social settings in
which children live and grow and it can be used by all those involved with
developing educational and literacy programs and publishing initiatives to
develop exemplary “international” collections.
