Strategy #1
Educate about
protection
9
Imagine if this happened to you . . .
• You find your
daughter posing

10
Imagine if this happened to you . . .
• Even though you have a filter, she
got there by going to a secure
anonymizer, https://fluteswimmer.com

11
Almost all filters miss these…
• There are thousands of sites called
secure (https) anonymizers or proxy
sites that allow users to circumvent
most filtering systems
• These anonymizers are the most
common way users bypass Internet
blocking software
• 69% of parents are not even aware
that these sites exist

12
The landscape is changing – fast
• Worst of all, a
growing number of
young people think
that what she’s doing
is OK !!

13
Strategy #2
Encourage
accountability
14
Accountability leads to appropriate conduct
• “Research on social
behavior indicates
accountability to
another person is the
most effective means of
ensuring appropriate
social conduct.”
-- LCMS resolution

15
There is a growing need for protection and
accountability
• Men’s, women’s, or youth groups
• Organizational staffs
• Liability protection
• Members use the monitoring reports
to have open and honest
conversations with others about
where they go and what they see
online

16
And now we live in a mobile generation
• iPhone
• iTouch
• iPad
• Android
• Household router

17
Encourage accountability
Encourage them to:
• Maintain access to their family
members’ online accounts
and randomly check their
children’s E-mail and social
networking activity
• Be up front with their family
about their access and reasons
why they are monitoring them
• Be aware of all of the family’s
Internet use

Strategy #3
Teach the importance of
open communication lines
© Covenant Eyes - 2010
19
Parents have more influence than
they might think
• Parents are the biggest
influence on their
children’s behavior -more than friends, the
media, educators,
siblings, or church

20
What should you talk about?
Teach them to:
• Spend time with their children
online. Have them learn about their
children’s favorite online destinations
• Talk to their family about sexual
victimization and the potential
online dangers of pornography,
gaming, and social networking
• Train their family the responsible use
of online resources such as search
engines, YouTube, etc.

21
Stay informed
• Know what your families are
being exposed to and what
they are viewing
• Keep up with current and
emerging threats by reading
informative blogs and articles
• Have discussions with your own
family about what you have
learned - get their input as
well

22
Strategy #4:
Set the example by
using technology to
your advantage
23
Customization should be age-based
• Use software that can be:
– Adapted to your family’s needs
– Customized based on age
appropriateness
– Changed year to year to
match the growing maturity
level of your children

Filtering should not over block
• Some filters might block all pages on a
site based on a root URL or key word
regardless of the context, like craigslist
• The option with many filters is to block
the entire site, or allow the entire
site, such as google.com
• Choose a software that is
context-based, customizable, and
offers age-based ratings, not just for
each site, but for each page visited

36
How do I educate about protection?
Talk about it from the pulpit and
in counseling sessions:
1. Encourage accountability, with
software as a tool
2. Find out what computer
safeguards are utilized by your
schools, public library, homes
of children's friends, etc.)
3. Be aware of the changing
online landscape
© Covenant Eyes - 2010
37
The Internet is vast, yet parents can control it
4. Point them toward the freely
available resources on the
Covenant Eyes website, such as
• “Pure Minds Online” e-magazine
• “Parenting the Internet
Generation”
• “Protecting Kids on YouTube”
• “Breaking Free” blog & podcasts
• “Porn in the Pews” and much more
