The most lonely place is Crooks room. It is isolated away from the
others because he is black. Therefore this shows loneliness and racism.
In his room is a “tattered dictionary” and work tools. Steinbeck put
these in the room to show us that Crooks spends his time reading and
working. This is because he is lonely and has no friends. Also he does
not want anyone in his room which makes it any even more lonely place
because he won’t let anyone in.
However, when Lennie and Candy come to Crooks’ room the loneliness
disappears for a while because they stay and talk to Crooks. This makes
the loneliness go for a while because it is the first time Crooks has
guests in his room and secretly he likes it. This also links to loneliness
and friendship.

frequently banned book of 1990 … why??

DO YOU THINK THIS IS JUSTIFIED?
The world in the 1930s
• ‘Of Mice and Men’ first published in 1937
• The Wall Street crash of 1929 caused major
economic depression in the 1930s when:
– California was filling with refugee camps
– Drought and over-farming reduced fertile land
– Owners of ranches going bankrupt and land repossessed
by banks
– Some banks themselves were collapsing - suicides
– Even worse if you were black as America was a highly racist
and still segregated society
The World of the 1930s
• There was no more unclaimed land for the
poor masses to claim as their own
• Wages were low so no-one could save
• Many were unable to find jobs – 30%
unemployment
• There were no unions to protect workers –
migrants were the worst off. The rich stayed
rich (sometimes!) and the poor stayed poor
(or got poorer)
The American Dream
• Declaration of Independence; 4th July 1776
– “..all men are created equal, that they are endowed by
their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among
these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Was this dream still possible?

Chapter 1
The opening is set in a beautiful
clearing by a stream.
Chapters 2 -5
The meat of the story is set on the ranch, inside, in either
the bunkhouse, in Crooks' room or in the barn. At the
beginning of each chapter, there is a description of the
setting. Then, the sections largely focus on dialogue from
the characters. There is no official viewpoint; therefore,
Steinbeck wants the reader to draw his / her own
conclusions. There is rising and falling action in each
section, which leads to foreshadowing.
Chapter 6
The closing is set in a beautiful
clearing by a stream.
The structure of the text is cyclical, it is a circular
novella. This means that the first and last chapters
come full circle.
Thinking about Lennie and George’s situation, why do
you think Steinbeck chose to structure the novella in a
circle?
Think about what a circle represents or what terms
like ‘vicious circle’ mean?
How can you relate this to Crooks and others in the
novella?
