•Before the Spanish first ventured into Central America
from the colony of Spain (Mexico) in the early
sixteenth century, the area that would become El
Salvador was populated primarily by Indians of the
Pipil tribe -- a subgroup of a nomadic people known as
the Nahua, who had migrated into Central America
about 3000 B.C.

Although primarily an agricultural people, the Pipil built a number of large
urban centers, some of which developed into present-day cities, such as
Sonsonate and Ahuachapan

Translation in English
My heart hearts a song,
I begin to cry.
Already I know myself.
We go among flowers.
We will leave the earth here.
We are loaned to one another.
We go to His house.
Put on me a necklace
Of varied flowers.
They are in my hands,
Garlands flower on me.
We will leave the earth here.
We are loaned to one another.
We go to His house.
• The Spanish tried to conquer the region several times and
were defeated by the Pipils. However, Hernan Cortes led an
army that entered El Salvador in mid sixteenth century.
•Under the Spanish Colonial Empire, El Salvador was part of the
Kingdom of Guatemala -- which governed most of Central
America -- as a province until 1700s
• The Spanish had come, in part, seeking for precious metals in
the El Salvador (South America). But they found that
El Salvador’s sole exploitable resource was land.
Route Toward independence
In 1821, El Salvador and the other Central American provinces
declared their independence from Spain. When these provinces
were joined with Mexico in early 1822, El Salvador resisted,
insisting on autonomy for the Central American countries.
Guatemalan troops - sent to enforce the union - were driven out
of El Salvador in June 1822. El Salvador, fearing incorporation
into Mexico, petitioned the U.S. Government for statehood.
•After a revolution in Mexico, the mexican congress
voted to allow the Central American provinces to decide
their own fate.
•Hence El Salvador became independent under General Manuel
Jose in 1838.
•Initially El Salvador faced frequent revolutions by different
factions, but it was not until 1900-30 that they achieved
political stability.
