Ceres and District Diary
A newsletter for the people of Ceres and District
A snowflake is a winter's butterfly
As we approach the shortest day of the year (21st
December) it is interesting to notice how winter
traditions and Christmas customs have changed over
the years. In Ceres, on the Winter Solstice, the sun will
rise at 07:41 and set at 16:09. With only just over eight
hours of daylight, you can easily understand why our
agricultural ancestors used to hold feasts and
ceremonies to pray for the return of the daylight, and
with it new crops. Traditionally, the winter solstice
marked the festival of Saturnalia – a time of
celebrating the god Saturn, traditionally associated
with agriculture and renewal. Festivities would be held
to honour the god and to encourage the sleeping land
to start its regeneration for the Spring.
With the coming of Christianity, the winter festival of
Saturnalia was taken over to represent the time of the
birth of Christ, and Christmas came into being. Many
of our modern traditions have their roots in ancient
times. The tradition of hanging mistletoe goes back to
ancient Druids who believed that mistletoe contained
magic powers to ward off evil spirits.
Mince pies were traditionally filled with meat and
were made in an oval shape to represent the manger
in which Jesus was laid when he was born. Only the
very richest could afford mince pies, and employed
special pastry chefs to make them in ever more
fanciful shapes such as stars, moons and even jigsaw
pieces that could fit together. One custom from the
middle ages says that if you eat a mince pie every day
from Christmas to Twelfth Night (6th January) you will
have happiness for the next 12 months – and
indigestion, perhaps?
Many people mistakenly believe that the 12 days of
Christmas start twelve days before Christmas, but in
fact Christmas Day is the first of the 12 days, which is
why Twelfth Night is so called. Twelfth Night is also
known as Epiphany and it marks the supposed date
that the three Wise Men visited the infant Jesus.
The origins of Boxing Day go back to the traditional
custom of the Laird and Lady of the manor who would
give gifts to their tenants and estate workers on the
day after Christmas Day. They would travel around
their estate handing out these boxes – hence “Boxing
Day”.
In Scotland, we tend to celebrate Christmas more
quietly than elsewhere. Some Scottish families
including the Queen and her family, choose to
exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, whereas most of us
keep our presents for Christmas Day itself. The
favourite Scottish winter festival is of course
Hogmanay. In the east coast fishing communities and
in Dundee, first-footers once carried a decorated
herring while in Falkland, local men marched in
torchlight procession to the top of the Lomond Hills as
midnight approached. Bakers in St Andrews baked
special cakes for their Hogmanay celebration (known
as 'Cake Day') and distributed them to local children.
During the winter time, other religions also have their
own winter festivities, including the Jewish festival of
Hannukah, which is also known as the Festival of the
Lights. During this eight-day festival, Jewish families
light another branch of the candelabrum known as a
menorah each day, until all 8 candles are lit, plus an
extra light called the shamash.
Buddhists recognise Bodhi Day or the Day of
Enlightenment on 8th December, celebrating the day
that the historical Buddha (Shakyamuni or Siddhartha
Gautama) experienced enlightenment. Some Hindus
hold a five-day festival in late December to honour the
Lord Ganesha. Even the world of fiction has its own
winter festivals, including “Hogswatch” invented by
the author Terry Pratchett and featuring in his
Discworld series of books.

Seasons of Ceres
This week we held our AGM and our first planning meeting for the next season.
Having reluctantly emptied the tubs and troughs of their fading summer colourful displays, we intend to plant them
with daffodil bulbs during the first week in November, to be followed by top planting with pansies in February, weather
permitting.
We are always looking for additional help, so if you would like to add your name to our list of volunteers,
please email Susi Welch ([email protected]) We would be delighted to welcome you to our team.

Here's to the Year That's Awa
Here's to the year that's awa!
We'll drink it in strong and in sma'!
And here's to ilk bonnie young lassie we

While swift flew the year that's awa;
And here's to ilk bonnie young lassie we
lo'ed
While swift flew the year that's awa.
Here's to the sodger who bled,
And the sailor who bravely did fa';
Their fame is alive, though their spirits
are fled
On the wings o the year that's awa;
Their fame is alive, though their spirits
are fled
On the wings o the year that's awa.
Here's to the friends we can trust
When the storms of adversity blaw;
May they live in our song and be nearest
our heart,
Nor depart like the year that's awa;
May they live in our song and be nearest
our heart,
Nor depart like the year that's awa.
