NEW REFINERY PROJECT (NRP)
World’s Largest Grass-Roots Refinery Project:

7.5 Million M2 site located at Al-Zour

615 KBPSD crude processing capacity

Processes Kuwait’s export, medium and heavy grade crude‘s
Project Objectives:

Improves the environmental condition of the country

Produces 225 KBPSD low sulfur fuel oil for meeting the growing
demand of LSFO needed for power generation

Economical and Strategic outlet for a good portion of Kuwaiti Heavy
Crude's

Provides 340 KBPSD of export products. (ULS diesel, ULS kerosene,
petrochemical naphtha and LPG)

Fully operational March 2012

NRP- Major challenges

World’s largest single refinery being located close to desalination plant &
recreational area requiring adoption of highest safety / health &
environment standards

Very high sulfur Crude’s (4 -5 %) considered for processing

Large numbers of high pressure reactors and vessels required for the
project

Very busy situation for Engineering & Construction Companies

Size of the project in terms of scope of work and value of the project
being very large, necessitated dividing the project scope among multiple
EPC contractors

Successful interface management between all EPC Contractors
32
CLEAN FUEL PROJECT 2020
33
Description & Objectives

To remain competitive in the hydrocarbon industry

Value addition, Efficiency, Reliability

To produce high quality products while maintaining safe and
environment friendly operations

To meet social responsibilities

CFP Major Challenges






One of the world’s largest refinery expansion / modernization
project.
Work in close coordination within existing Refinery premises.
Large numbers of high pressure reactors and vessels
required for the project.
High demand on EPC contractors
Large Size of the project in terms of scope of work and value of
the project necessitated dividing the project scope into three
packages.
Successful interface management between all EPC Contractors
and Refineries.
