BIOME (DESERT)
OUR BIOME
The biome we chose is ‘desert’.
It is an environment and place where animals
and plants are adapted to the desert.
Deserts have less than 10 inches of rain per year
but sometime there will be no rain the whole
year. The temperature reaches up to 50 C and
sometimes higher.

PLANTS ADAPTATION TO THE DESERT
Different plants have different ways to adapt to
the desert. They have their own way to get water.
Some plants have developed tap roots. These tap
roots can extend to thirty meters below the surface
to get the water from underground.
ANIMALS ADAPTATION TO THE DESERT
All desert animals have found one way or
another to adapt to the desert climate they
live in. Some animals only come out at night
when the desert is cooler. Some animals
have the ability to store water or go without it
for long periods of time. Other animals have
adapted to the desert by storing body fat in
their tails or in a hump like the camel.
HUMAN ACTIVITY #1
Many types of human activities hurt the
desert. Driving off the road is one of these
activities. Many people drive off road in
vehicles in unrestricted areas all over the
desert. Their vehicles leave tracks on the soil,
which will effect the land for decades. These
tracks also kill off vegetation. When vegetation
is harmed, so are the animals.
HUMAN ACTIVITY #2
Another human activity the effects the
desert is the construction through out the
desert. For example, new factories, hospitals,
highways, new cities, shopping malls and much
more. They effect the desert by taking over the
space where animals and plants live.
