Professional experience
> Tariq Shamsi
> Sales Director Middle East for Köttermann based in Dubai, UAE
> 30 years’ experience of Laboratory Furniture and Laboratory Equipment in the Middle East market
> Main Experience:




Education
Petrochemical sector
Healthcare sector
Many mega projects like Princess Noora University, King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Aramco, Sabic,
Hamad Medical City, Sidra Hospital, Qatar Foundation( North American Universities furnishing projects )
3
Köttermann GmbH & Co KG
> Worldwide company, head office and production facility
in Germany (70 KM from Hannover Airport in Hänigsen.
Hamburg is nearest Sea Port)
> 10 subsidiaries today
> 6 area sales directors and managers
(EU, Russia, Middle East, Asia, India and Latin America)
> 89 partners and dealers including installers worldwide
> All above have been trained in our training facility in
Hanigsen, Germany, to offer you the best possible service,
know how and installation
4
Laboratories today – some facts
> The research and the work in laboratories will be more extreme as
more results will be required in the future
> Laboratories today require an effective ventilation to handle a large
amount of in and out flow
> One fume cupboard uses the same amount of energy, e.g. one family
home for 4 persons
> The age of the ventilation system has a large impact on the effect of
costs
5
High interest in laboratories
> There are many different interests in laboratories today as
many different departemens are involved.
And each one of them believe that their task is the
most importent one.
But :
What is the main goal for a new laboratory ?
6
Many stakeholders and many sub-goals in the laboratory
Safety always comes first
Director
Head of Institute
Tech manager
Purchasing
User
Consultant
Supervisor
Safety advisor
Energy
Sustainability
Result
Functionality
Safety
Service
Price
Etc.
But:
> Sustainability becomes more and more evident
- low energy consumption
- long lifecycles
- environmental friendly
> Total costs of ownership
- investment
- running costs
- others
> Running costs of fume cupboards
- mainly caused by consumption of preconditioned air
- depends on the volume flow ( exhaust volume )
8
Consequence:
> Fume cupboards, ventilation systems, chemical waste,
and equipment make laboratories one of the biggest
challenges striving to become more sustainable.
Reducing energy consumption is one if the most
important aspects of making laboratories more
sustainable.
9
What can be done to make laboratory work more sustainable?
> Providing knowledge about the total energy costs of
running laboratories can build motivation for more
energy-efficient behaviour in those who use them.
> Reduce water
> Proper waste management
10
What can be done to make laboratory work more sustainable?
> Usage and storage:
 Knowing precisely where chemicals are stocked is vital for
optimising storage (labelling)
 When possible: substitution with less hazardous alternatives
(safer and less waste costs)
> Store secondary equipment such as vacuum pumps that
produce a lot of excess heat in a specially designated room
11
What can be done to make laboratory work more sustainable?
AND, of course:
> Reduction of energy consumption !
> Energy visualisation in the laboratory
12
What is the most energy comsuming element in a laboratory?
The fume cupboard
13
What is a fume cupboard ?
> The fume cupboard functions can be expressed as the ability to




Remove pollution released from a source inside the fume cupboard
Extracting gases, fumes, and vapors etc. from fume cupboard
Protection against spatter and fragments from uncontrolled reactions
Explosion protection
 Main function is to make people and the environment around the fume cupboard safe
!
14
Safety vs. Sustainability
> Dilemma
The higher the volume flow the higher the safety
15
Safety vs. Sustainability
> Answer:
Energy efficient fume cupboards that remain safe !
16
Important fume cupboard characteristics for
energy-saving and safety:
Fume cupboard sash closes automatically when user is absent
 self-closing sash (AutoProtect)
17
Important fume cupboard characteristics for
energy-saving and safety:
Easy and safe operation of fume cupboards
Operating panel for easy use of all necessary fume cupboard functions
User receives all important information at a glance,
e.g. about the state of the ventilation system
18
Important fume cupboard characteristics for
energy-saving and safety:
Safe and efficient waste collection system
Monitoring of fill levels via Display with alarm when fill level is exceeded
19
Important fume cupboard characteristics for
energy-saving and safety:
Temperature sensor in the air collection box to determine the
extracted air temperature
Temperature display for exhaust air
Permanent checking of exhaust air temperature
Alarm when the set alarm value is exceeded
20
Important fume cupboard characteristics for
energy-saving and safety:
Ability to communicate with building management systems
21
EXPLORIS EcoPlus®:
The energy-efficient safe fume cupboard
22
EXPLORIS EcoPlus® – The energy-efficient fume cupboard
> PROVEN SAFETY AT 250 m3/h WITHOUT AUXILIARY AIRFLOW
Fulfills demanding robustness test requirements without
expensive accessory air supply. Fulfills the demands of French INRS.
> EVEN MORE ECONOMICAL, THANKS TO LOW AIR CONSUMPTION
Reduces fume cupboard operating costs by up to 30 %
Lowers purchase costs for the exhaust system
> EXEMPLARY SUSTAINABILITY
Low air consumption for low environmental impact
Steel construction for durability and trouble-free disposal
23
EXPLORIS EcoPlus® – The energy-efficient fume cupboard
> ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS
- rear Baffle “EcoPlus”
- new roof-part “EcoPlus”
> SUITABLE FOR
- bench mounted fume cupboard with low housing
- Air Monitor for monitoring of Volume (pressure sensor)
> TESTS
- 1200, 1500, 1800 mm with external letter of conformity
- 2000, 2100 mm with internal letter of conformity
> RETROFIT
