AACN Update 2014 A nurse’s everyday work is the work of AACN because our mission is lived at the point of care. Our Mission Patients and their families rely on nurses at the most vulnerable times of their lives. Acute and critical care nurses rely on AACN for expert knowledge and influence to fulfill their promise to patients and their families. AACN drives excellence because nothing less is acceptable. We Believe • Nurses must be agents of positive change … in their organizations. • We need to work together … each individual member, member volunteers, boards of directors and staff — to steward our mission. This Year’s Strengths and Accomplishments Membership and Recognition Membership and Recognition • Grew membership to more than 102,000, further strengthening the community and voice of high acuity and critical care nurses. Membership has grown by 40 percent since July 2008. Membership and Recognition • Named Dana Woods as the new CEO of AACN to provide leadership and strategic vision to implement the work of AACN and AACN Certification Corporation. • Honored Wanda Johanson with the Marguerite Rodgers Kinney Award for a Distinguished Career for her contributions as CEO for 14 years and 40 years as a local, regional and national volunteer, including service as AACN president. Membership and Recognition • AACN members elected new members to the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee for 2014 – AACN president-elect: Karen McQuillan – AACN directors: Deborah Klein, Megan Brunson, Paula McCauley and Nancy Freeland – Nominating Committee: Alvin Jeffery, Anna Dermenchyan and Erica DeBoer Membership and Recognition • Awarded 46 continuing professional development scholarships, including 16 health policy scholarships to attend 2014 Nurse in Washington Internship program. www.aacn.org/scholarships • Awarded 10 entry-into-nursing scholarships through the National Student Nurses Association Foundation. www.nsna.org Membership and Recognition • Presented three Flame of Excellence Awards and 25 Circle of Excellence Awards during NTI 2014. www.aacn.org/awards • Selected Dr. Elizabeth Bridges as the 2015 Distinguished Research Lecturer for her significant contributions to acute and critical care research. www.aacn.org/drl Membership and Recognition • Collaborated with more than 1,000 volunteers on review panels, work groups and advisory teams: www.aacn.org/volunteers Healthy Work Environments Healthy Work Environments • Completed national survey of 8,400 nurses to evaluate the current state of critical care nurses’ work environments. Preliminary results were presented at a healthy work environments conference of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. • Published a summary report online in May 2014 in Critical Care Nurse. Analysis of direct care nurses’ perceptions of leadership competence was published in the June 2014 issue of Nurse Leader. www.aacn.org/hwe Healthy Work Environments • Initiated a comprehensive literature review of HWE standards to guide an update of AACN’s standards document and develop new resources and advocacy activities. www.aacn.org/hwe Professional Practice and Programs Professional Practice and Programs • Awarded three Impact Research Grants, with up to three grants to be awarded in 2015. www.aacn.org/grants • Awarded 122 Beacon Awards for Excellence™ — Gold: 34, Silver: 72, Bronze: 26 — to units that distinguished themselves by improving every facet of patient care. www.aacn.org/beacon Professional Practice and Programs • Expanded AACN Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) Academy — a hospital-based nurse leadership and innovation training program — to 42 hospitals. • AACN is investing $1.25 million over three years to fund national implementation at partner hospitals to measurably improve patient outcomes with bottom-line impact to the hospital. www.aacn.org/csi Professional Practice and Programs • The total fiscal impact from the first of the initial AACN CSI Academy cohorts exceeds $20 million. These results were presented at Innovation Conferences in North Carolina, Indiana and Massachusetts. • Developed the AACN CSI Academy Innovation Database to provide access to a compilation of CSI team results and documentation. Professional Practice and Programs • Reached more than 52,000 nurses during calendar year 2013, — including more than 37,000 unique learners — with conferences and conference-related programs. • Held the 41st annual National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI) in 2014 in Denver, attended by more than 6,000 high acuity and critical care nurses. Professional Practice and Programs • Presented Clinical Priorities (formerly Slice of NTI) conference for in Las Vegas, 2014. • Presented the third annual AACN Nurse Manager Priorities and AACN Progressive Care Pathways conferences in Las Vegas, 2014. • Both conferences continue, Sept. 28-Oct. 1, 2014, in Nashville. www.aacnconferences.org Professional Practice and Programs Attracted an average of more than 2,000 participants per event, including nearly 300 new-to-AACN participants each month, through AACN’s popular monthly Critical Care Webinar Series. These free, live monthly presentations by nationally known speakers cover timely clinical topics. www.aacn.org/webinars Professional Practice and Programs • Launched the ACCNS-AG Certification Review Course to help adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) better prepare for the ACCNS-AG certification exam. The new course fully aligns with the ACCNS-AG certification exam introduced last year, the only exam currently available for this CNS specialty that aligns with the new standards of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation. Professional Practice and Programs • Joined the Healthcare Technology Safety Institute and other leading healthcare organizations to present a series of free webinars on managing clinical alarms. The seven-part Alarm Systems Management Webinar Series focused on preparing multidisciplinary healthcare teams to comply with The Joint Commission’s new National Patient Safety Goal on alarm management. Professional Practice and Programs • Released two new AACN Practice Alerts: “Alarm Management,” to reduce false or non-actionable alarms and improve the effective use of these monitoring aids, and “Assessing Pain in Critically Ill Adults,” to standardize how nurses evaluate patients for pain, especially when patients are unable to speak. www.aacn.org/practicealerts Professional Practice and Programs • Brought the bold voice of high acuity and critical care nurses to national tables through liaison activities, collaboration and shared expertise. • Supported Choosing Wisely®, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation intended to spur conversations between patients and healthcare providers on what tests and procedures are really necessary. Professional Practice and Programs • Updated “AACN Scope and Standards for Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice” to reflect the specialty’s evolving role in an ever-changing critical care landscape. The new edition incorporates advances in scientific knowledge, clinical practice and technology, and aligns with the “Consensus Model for APRN Regulation” — also called the LACE Model. Publications and Social Media Publications and Social Media • Published the third editions of “AACN Essentials of Critical Care Nursing” and “AACN Essentials of Progressive Care Nursing” in April 2014. Excellent resources to help prepare for the CCRN and PCCN certification exams, these texts offer the latest and most essential information on guidelines, case studies and best practices for treating patients across the spectrum of high acuity, progressive and critical care. www.aacn.org/essentialsbooks Publications and Social Media • The AACN peer-reviewed journals American Journal of Critical Care and Critical Care Nurse were once again finalists in several categories for the Western Publishing Association’s prestigious 2014 Maggie Awards. Publications and Social Media • Facebook and Twitter presence for AACN, NTI, American Journal of Critical Care and Critical Care Nurse continues to grow substantially. At the end of April 2014, Facebook “likes” were aacnface: 34,890, ntiface: 4,731, ajccface: 3,783, ccnface: 6,562. AACN had 8,988 aacnme Twitter followers. Certification Certification • Increased nurses certified by AACN Certification Corporation to more than 85,000. • Launched Web-based tools for program directors to submit Education Eligibility Forms and track graduate performance. • Provided financial support to sponsor the Institute of Medicine workshop, Future Directions of Credentialing Research in Nursing, in September 2014. Certification • Aligned all AACN Certification Corporation certification exams for advanced practice nurses with the requirements of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation. With the launch of a new credentialing exam for clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) who care for neonatal patients (ACCNS-N), AACN Certification Corporation now has four Consensus Model-aligned advanced practice exams. Certification • Completed exam development to launch new PCCN exam forms based on the 2012 Progressive Care Study of Practice. Practice exam questions with rationale were developed, and AACN launched new online certification review courses for the PCCN exam. • Offered special 50 percent discount on review course for PCCN exam candidates. www.aacn.org/pccn Certification • Implemented exam and resource development for: o ACCNS-AG — Launched the new exam in July 2013 and developed a new ACCNS-AG practice exam booklet. AACN developed an ACCNS-AG review course, provided free to registered exam candidates. o ACCNS-P — Launched the new exam in July 2013 and developed a new ACCNS-P practice exam booklet. o ACCNS-N — Launched the new exam in February 2014. www.aacn.org/certification
