school band experience
OR

OR
Fine Art : a combination of
Art, Drama and Music
Socials and English OR
Humanities ?
 You
can choose to take Social Studies and
English separately OR
You can choose to take Humanities which
thematically integrates the English and Social
Studies curricula.
Humanities involves making connections
between literature and the world around you.
Humanities ( or Hum)




Humanities is for students who think thematically,
who look at things through a thematic lens,
who naturally draw connections.
It’s about teaching connections between disparate
subject areas; for example, how does a character’s
journey to self-discovery in a novel written about the
1940’s relate to a journey of self discovery during the
Middle Ages?



What is heroism. Then? Now?
It involves analysis and drawing connections…
Please consult with your teacher about which might be
the best choice for you.
Humanities

Do NOT choose Humanities if you want to have the same
teacher twice! It is NOT intended for this purpose!!!

BOTH Hum and English and Socials teach the same
curriculum…Hum makes connections between the two,
while Socials/English keep novel studies and history and
social studies distinct/separate.

Hum is NOT intended for students who need structure.

It is NOT designed for the purpose of making transition to
high school easier.
Math
 Math
8, Math 8 Challenge and Core Math
8
Students, with teacher and parent input,
choose the course which best suits their
ability.
Regular Math 8
 MOST
students choose Regular Math 8.
Math 8 Challenge

Math challenge is for students who have at least a “B”
and good work habits. You should enjoy Math.

Students choose this themselves during course
selection.

Students who sign up will be writing a placement test at
SDSS. This will be at 3:00 pm right after Spirit Day on
Tuesday, June 5th in the SDSS Library.

There is room for approximately 30 students to take
Math Challenge.
Math Challenge Continued…
 Placement
in Math Challenge is based
upon the exam score and also a ranking
that the Grade 7 teacher gives to the
student.
 The class list will be posted on Mr.
Outerbridge’s webpage in late June so that
students and parents can find out whether
students are in the class or not.
 Mr. O’s webpage is on our SDSS website.
Core Math
 Core
Math is designed for students who are
having significant struggles with Math.
 It
should only be chosen after consultation
with your teacher, LA or Resource room
teacher.
 Do
NOT choose this course yourself.
