The History of Walk Georgia
• Walk Georgia began in 2008
• More than 50,000 participants have already taken part in Walk
Georgia, logging over 4 million miles worth of physical activity!
• A grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation in 2013 has helped expand
Walk Georgia and enable a redesign so that Walk Georgia can meet
its goals of reaching 100,000 Georgians by 2016
• Walk Georgia has already become one of the most visible outreach
programs of UGA’s Obesity Initiative, an initiative implemented at the
university to leverage research, teaching and outreach resources in
order to serve people throughout our state
First, you create an account:

reports to show progress!

Why Walk Georgia?
• Not only is Walk Georgia a free program, but it’s the
only 100% free program that will offer you, your
school, your business, your government or your
organization LOCAL information about how to stay
healthy.
• Walk Georgia is unique because it knows what parks
are near you, how cold it is outside and that your
recipes will pretty much require peaches and
blueberries in July and August…
Many organizations use the
versatility of Walk Georgia as a way
to measure progress in order to cut
expenses on their insurance costs, or
to receive health care credits.
Did You Know:
• Georgia has the 10th highest childhood obesity rate in
the nation. Currently, 35% of Georgia’s youth are
overweight or obese. Because obese children have a
higher risk to become obese adults, we need to take
action now to help give our current and future citizens
the opportunity to live a long, healthy and full life.
• Working with Walk Georgia can be used in tandem with
your school’s physical activity goals, such as Power Up
for 30 program or wellness council, and could even help
your school gain additional funds!
Walk Georgia is perfect for schools!
•
Walk Georgia has built-in group functions to accommodate
classrooms, grades, teacher organizations and more! Walk Georgia
worked with 17 schools during its pilot phase to ensure it was
school-approved!
•
Walk Georgia is working to provide lesson plans so teachers can
incorporate fitness and learning all in one lesson! We currently have
six 5th grade math lessons and many more in the works, including
8th grade GA studies & middle school social studies!

In order to meet our goal of reaching 100,000 Georgians by 2016 &
decreasing the number of physically inactive people in159 counties by
5%, W E N E E D Y O U.
If every county in Georgia reached just 55
people each month, together we would
change the lives of over 100,000 people. Not
only that, we would change the way our state
sees itself: strong, fit, healthy and diverse.
For each quarter of 2015,
the Walk Georgia county
Extension office with the
most new users per capita
will be entered in a
drawing for an iPad!
