Intense competition for initial teacher training courses – primary
and secondary (ideally 2:1 and above degree)
Shortage subjects
Pass QTS Skills Tests (literacy and numeracy) before training
National curriculum subject focus – 50% minimum – for primary
and 11-16 year old courses
GCSE requirements specified (secondary English, Maths,
Science for secondary, English and Maths for primary)
Perfect applications – personal statement convincing of
motivation for teaching
Interviews for teaching courses – micro teach possible
Subject skills, ideas to engage children/young people,
enthusiasm, behaviour management, assessment (SATS) and
recording, dealing with parents
GETTING RELEVANT
EXPERIENCE
Teaching – 10 days in a school (MUST)
Contact your old primary/secondary school, use friends and relations as
contacts, contact head teachers direct.

SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
PROGRAMME (SEP)
A maximum of 10 placement days – register for this
programme (see link below)
BUT
You can only apply for the SEP if you hold
• a first class or 2:1 degree and are considering teaching
secondary maths, physics, chemistry, modern foreign
languages (MFL) or computer science.

Most through UCAS Teacher Training (used to be GTTR)

Apply 1 (first round application) allows you up to 3 choices.
If you get no offers, Apply 2 allows you try other unis or
School Direct/SCITT partnerships one by one.
Some post compulsory courses require you to apply direct to
the university – check prospectuses.
TIMINGS
You need to have your 10 days school experience to show on
your UCAS Teacher Training application
You apply from November.
If you do not have this experience but have some
booked/organised, clearly show that you have something
arranged with date details.
If there is no evidence of the 10 days school experience, it is
highly unlikely (almost impossible) you will be selected for
interview.
