 The
origin of the company’s name comes
from the winged goddess of victory according
to Greek mythology—Nike.
 The notorious “swoosh” symbol represents
the spirit of the winged goddess of victory.
 The swoosh was first used in 1971 and the
first shoe to show off this new design was the
soccer shoe named after its company name,
“Nike.”

 Nike
has grown to be the world's
largest marketer of athletic
footwear and apparel.
 The concept behind the famous
shoe company was to create a
good running shoe for the
average American.
 Track athlete, Philip Knight and
his coach, Bill Bowerman,
founded the company in 1964 as
Blue Ribbon Sports.

 In
1978, the company’s former name, Nike,
was finally born.
 Originally, the company functioned as a
distributor for Onitsuka Tiger, a Japanese
shoemaker, making most of its sales at track
meets out of Philip Knight’s car.
 By 1980, the company obtained a market
share of 50% in the U.S athletic shoe market.
