Rikki Tikki Tavi is brave and full of curiosity Nag and Nagaina are characterized as pure evil.

Middle School kids would like this story because it’s like a superhero story.

Also in the story, Nagaina jumps into a hole with Rikki Tikki Tavi, and the animals think Rikki Tikki Tavi will be killed.

Did he survive? Mongooses have fast reflexes and thick skin. Who will win?

theme

If you try really hard, you accomplish what you set out to do.

This is a good theme for middle school kids because it shows them that they can accomplish anything in school.

imagery

Ex. “One day a high summer flood washed him out of the burrow …and carried him, kicking and clucking down a roadside ditch. He found a little wisp of grass floating there, and clung to it till he lost his senses. There is a lot of detail and description that helps you picture Rikki in your head.

Figurative language

“He could fluff up his tail until it looked a bottle brush.’’ Kipling uses similes like this one all through the story. We can just imagine what Rikki looks like when he is ready to fight.

Word choice

• “ She [Nagaina] had crept up behind him as he was talking, to make an end of him; and he heard her savage hiss as the stroke missed.” Kipling selects words that show how Nagaina is scary, sneaky, and evil. http://cdn2.arkive.org/media/BF/BF91400A-3497-4513-B548 A8247724C41D/Presentation.Large/Indian-grey-mongoose-attacking-a snake.jpg

The author

The story by Rudyard Kipling would be great to include because he’s popular for writing books about animals like The Jungle Book even though he lived a long time ago. He was born on December 30, 1865, in Mumbai. He won the 1907 Nobel Prize for Literature. http://broadwayworld.com/columnpic/Jungle%20Book%20Logo%20 2.jpg
