Thoughts
• Initially family or love for the sport will draw
people to volunteer the challenge is to retain
these individuals
• Question—how do we attract others to join
who may not have been previously exposed or
have family members to bring them back new
• Try new approaches in asking for help

game a year to give them experience

toolbox for Coaches and Athletes to
improve Hockey in the North?

paper and web based)
• 40% education and communication (clinics,
workshops, etc)
Hot Stove Session
• We need to change—continue discussions
about freedom of movement for the whole
NOHA
• You need to be playing the same system as the
rest of your team—working towards a
common goal
• Skill development is critical
• Europe the structure is built from the top
down
• Get goalies involved in skating drills at an early
age
• Keep practices for the goalies at game speed
to everyone
• Suggest 2:1 practice to game ratio
• Enhance off ice training potential such as
gyms, road hockey, soccer, etc.
General Comments
• Officials need to service the game first, feel
part of a team second and then look after
themselves
• 2 Official system for every game – equal
responsibility
• Lead, develop and promote positive hockey
experience

• Health and well-being of nation starts with an
effective sports system
• Active for life
• Building athletic base
• Over competing and under training

• Young people need role models not critics
• Language, respect, culture, education
• Opportunity to make things better—fine
tuning is a good thing
• We wait for people to knock at our door—we
need to approach

• What messages are people hearing about
minor hockey—is it positive
• Should be hearing about the great valuesteam work, learning to budget, learning about
independence, etc
• Why do we not send brochures home with
students at school

• Need to watch that we don’t become
complacent—we need to always improve
• Better links with university hockey
• Getting people committed and staying in the
game
• Need exposure of our programs

• Allow to see the game playing at the highest
level
• Be a good role model—someone is always
watching
• Communication is critical
• Players want and need discipline—allows
them to excel and win

• Kids like to read about their team—it builds
pride
