From late summer to Thanksgiving, pumpkins are
everywhere, a symbol of fall and a reminder of the
holidays to come. In this handsome book, Ken
Robbins--widely known for his sumptuous photoessays on subjects ranging from trucks to tools to
autumn leaves--portrays the pumpkin from seed, to
sprout, to flower, to fully fledged fruit, and back
again. Instructions are given to (safely) carve a jacko'-lantern. As always in a book by Ken Robbins, a
simple--but never simplisitc--text is accompanied by
luscious photographs.

When Buck, Billy, and their little sister Lil spy
the biggest pumpkin they've ever seen, they can't
resist. Buck and Billy try to roll the pumpkin
down the hill to show everyone, but it's too big!
Before they know it, it's bumping and thumping
and rolling down the hillside out of control. This
read aloud Halloween treat is perfect for kids and
families.
Happy Halloween!
I’m a little pumpkin,
Round and stout.
Packed full of seeds
That you can scoop out.
When I get all carved up,
Then I will be
The cutest jack-o-lantern
You ever did see!

Here is an adorable picture book for curious kids, which explores skip
counting and estimation in a fun pumpkin-themed classroom experiment.
"How many seeds are in a pumpkin?" Mr. Tiffin asks his class as they
gather around the big, medium, and small pumpkins on his desk. Robert,
the biggest kid, guesses that the largest one has a million seeds; Elinor,
sounding like she knows what she's talking about, guesses the medium
one has 500 seeds; and Anna, who likes even numbers better than odd
ones, guesses that the little one has 22. Charlie, the smallest boy in the
class, doesn't have a guess. Counting pumpkin seeds is messy business,
but once the slimy job is done, to everyone's surprise, the smallest
pumpkin has the most seeds! As Charlie happily exclaims, "Small things
have a lot going on inside of them." This book makes a wonderful readaloud companion to any math or science curriculum, and it's a fun way to
reinforce counting skills at home.
