General Usage:
 CamStudio is a program to record screen activity to AVI video
files.
 Screen-capture; annotate screen movies with text captions
and callouts
 A valuable option is webcam annotations, which allows users
to “record [webcam] content along with other screen content
when the webcam window is inside your recording region”
(“CamStudio” 25).
CamStudio Advantages
 Free and simple download process.
 Program is simple for beginners (Clark and Kou 75).
 Features follow best practice in design by offering quick,
reliable, and clear-cut functions (Gentle, 2012).
 Allows users to record, pause, stop the images and audio on
their computers in real-time.
CamStudio Advantages, Cont.
 Can record audio from speakers or microphone.
 Allows for hotkey combinations to control the recording
process and allow for sections of the screen or the entire
screen to be captured (Gentle, 2012).
 Available in English, German, Japanese, French, Dutch
Hungarian, and Italian versions.
CamStudio Advantages, cont.
 Optionally record directly to Flash SWF for small streamable
movie files with lossless compression.
 Auto-pan allows fixed region to follow the mouse.
 Auto-name files by date/time to avoids typing.
 Screencast videos are cheaper to implement than live video,
and also aid in student achievement (Gentle, 2012).
CamStudio Disadvantages
 No editing capabilities, so your movie and annotations must
be carefully planned before you begin recording (Chastain).
 Not a robust solution…CNET Editors note that CamStudio
has a long way to catch up to commercial rivals.
 In Windows 7, must stay under 10 minutes to avoid File
Creation Error (CNET).
Sustainability
 According to the guidelines given, sustainability
includes:
 Effectiveness
 Efficiency
 Financial viability
 Equity
 Reproducibility
 Portability
(Module 5: Design (P2: Media Selection), p. 9)
CamStudio Sustainability
Effective in assisting educators within
Distance Learning and traditional
classrooms
Flipped Classroom Model
Allows for extended learning outside of
classroom
CamStudio Sustainability, cont.
Free software optimizes its availability and
usage
Program optimizes available resources to
minimize bandwidth
User-friendly controls
Available for users of personal computers
and for viewing on mobile devices
Usability
According to guidelines given,
usability standards include, among
other items:
Consistency of layout and formatting
Accessibility for all users and viewers
(Module 5: Design (P2: Media Selection), p. 9)
CamStudio Usability
Layout is dependent on the users
personal preferences since it is
recording the user’s computer images
Likewise, format is dependent on the
user’s personal preferences and
settings
CamStudio Usability, cont.
Consistent, user-friendly features and
controls for usage
Final product is accessible through a
variety of devices and platforms
Access to all available features may be
limited on some mobile devices
Integration Opportunity
 Instructors at the Community College level will create and
post a lesson using CamStudio as the medium of choice to
simulate an environment that supports the strategies of a
flipped classroom. This software can be used for multiple
lessons and once created is easily posted to shared spaces
like an LMS or YouTube for ease of access for the students.
